ONE looking to raise more money from Qataris, future tho shakey

‘You can’t believe everything you read:’ Chatri Sityodtong denies ‘clickbait B.S.’ Qatar investment report

ONE Championship is doing just fine, according to its Founder, Chatri “Sityodtong” Trisiripisal.

"2023 has been a unique year for the Cayman Islands-based promotion. ONE made its United States debut in April, has been putting on shows as part of its Prime Video deal, emphasized striking arts like Muay Thai and kickboxing over mixed martial arts (MMA), and has seen one of its biggest stars, Angela Lee, retire."

Unfortunately for ONE, reports surfaced late last month (Nov. 20, 2023), claiming that the promotion has sought out another round of funding from one of its biggest investors in Qatar. ONE reportedly only contributed $50 million of a $150 million round of funding in 2021 and as a result, Qatar has been left feeling “embarrassed” by the partnership. Catching wind of the report, the aforementioned ONE frontman, Sityodtong, recently fired back when asked about the subject.

“No, absolutely not,” Sityodtong told South China Morning Post when asked if Qatar is “embarrassed” by the partnership. “We have a fantastic relationship with the Qatar government. They are a big shareholder in the company. We talk to all our shareholders and board members on a regular basis all the time. I’ve taken many trips out to Qatar and it’s always been very positive on both sides. We have tremendous love and respect for Qatar, and it’s reciprocal. It’s become one of my favorite places in the world.
“You can’t believe everything you read,” he continued. “We have very strong relationships with our shareholders and board, they fully support the company. When we announce our 60-plus event schedule [for 2024], it will lay a lot of the ‘B.S.’ to rest.”

ONE will have held just under 60 events with 59 by the end of 2023, proving that 60 or more should be easily attainable in 2024. Nearly all of ONE’s events in 2023 took place in Bangkok, Thailand, hosting 54 of the 59 in the city, typically in the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium. The promotion announced this past week (Nov. 30, 2023) that it will return to Tokyo, Japan with ONE 165 on Jan. 28, 2024. It will be the third ONE event held in the country. The first two events both took place in 2019.

The arguably biggest talking point to come out of the report on ONE’s financials is how the company has yet to turn over a profit in its 12 years of existence. Per the previous report, ONE’s filed financials through Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority show $67.7 million for 2021 and a reported $80 million estimate for 2022. However, these figures were reported by Deal Street Asia to include “non-cash components,” and “ONE’s true cash revenue in FY2022 is likely to be just $5-8 million.”

“How many times has there been misinformation of these clickbait articles in the last five years for ONE and what happened?” Sityodtong said. “We went on to have record-breaking years in terms of event viewership and revenue."

“This time it’s no different,” he continued. “It’s unfortunate people thrive on clickbait to drive their own readership, but it’s part of the territory when you’re the world’s largest martial arts organization, people are going to try to take pot shots, it’s just par for the course.

“We have very good visibility that our revenues will be north of $100 million (USD) this year,” Sityodtong concluded. “We have very high visibility for 2024 because of all these different deals we are doing and right now we are on track for $200 million in revenue in 2024.”

In terms of ONE’s profitability, Sityodtong has been optimistic about the turnover for several years now, dating back to 2017 when he claimed the company was “very close to profitability” (h/t South East Asia Globe). In 2019, Sityodtong said ONE “will be profitable within 18 to 24 months,” per Nikkei Asia. By 2022, ONE was claimed to be “profitable within 12 months” by Sityodtong (h/t Deal Street Asia).

Lmao! I didn't know they're based in the Cayman Islands now. I guess Singapore can only accommodate their tomfoolery for far too long.
The Cayman Islands move had nothing to do with Singapore not tolerating them, and everything to do with tax dodging and hiding the numbers. All their offices are still in Singapore.

ONE is easily the most entertaining promotion that I've seen in today's MMA. I have no idea why you hate it so much. Yeah..Chatri has bad business practices, but as a consumer ONE pretty much gives combat sports fans what they want and then some. I guess if you absolutely hate anything non-MMA then...sure, though I still don't get why you would hate it and simply just not watch it.

Compared to Bellator and PFL it is pretty much a god send as those other promotions have terrible booking and a ton of boring fighters. I'm sure someone will say something like did you know Bellator has been profitable (it really hasn't, but I digress) or something equally irrelevant.

I don't really get what Rizin has to do with anything other than Japanese people being Asian or how they are a bastion of quality. Rizin in the 2020's has been really boring save a few cards.
In terms of squash bouts tho, ONE is currently the champ tho

Saying they will do 60 events in 2024 does not sound realistic at all, but their ads are saying they promise once a month 12 is more possible..

Chatri called official documents they submitted themselves to the Singapore government as fake news and clickbait so take everything he says with a huge grain of salf

I think Chatri is surprised that journalist from west have been investigating this in more then three years. No way in hell someone from South East Asia would have the courage to cover this. I will remember ONE were trying to blackmail Will Chope and ruin his life since he lives in asia with his family. They can not do anything outside of asia. I can literally sit in Greenland and tell Chatri and ONE to go f*ck themselves and nothing will happen.

Abdulaziz Ali Al Mawlawi, the chief marketing and promotion officer for Qatar Tourism, spoke highly of ONE, “Qatar Tourism is delight to be the official event host, presenting partner, and VIP lounge sponsor of what will be the biggest One Championship event the region has ever seen. This exciting addition to Qatar’s world-class roster of events reinforces our commitment to bringing exceptional experiences that resonate with local and global audiences. As we strategically position ourselves as a hub for diverse and dynamic experiences, the partnership with ONE Championship showcases our dedication to hosting world-class sports and entertainment year-round for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

It sure costs them a lot but it does look good to have a major promotion doing events there, and Chatri has been making promises, said they will do five title fights at the event making it major world event.

Wonder if he would risk making it a pay-for-view as that would be stupid as time zones and just ONE doing title fights in Muay Thai and BJJ would not sell he would fail a Pay-for-view test, so hope he sells it as a gift to Qatar , his major shareholder/sponsor.

Get money before the event I hope. LOL

ONE needs to do events in LA if Dana can do his Slap there and BKFC can now do events there then ONE should be able to.

60 is possible with their weekly heavily muay thai focused cards.
Exactly, let’s say 48 of them are the weekly Muay Thai events, and then once a month Prime card, aka he is saying they are doing the same thing they are doing this year. Chatri does it again by trying to twist words and making something seem bigger then it actually is

I dont really watch One cause I dont care about MT/kickboxing but they should just be a striking org and let the mma guys go. Malykhin wasting away in One is a travesty. I know it wont happen but sure seems like mma has taken a back seat in One. Only time i ever seen anyone showing interest in One on twitter is over MT/kickboxing matches. And not that they were ever big time free agent players but they did get MM, signed eddie and sage and lineker and looked like ok they're a real player but that kind of stopped. Soldic was like the last free agent they signed. Think they realized they can be home for best guys in mt/kickboxing and cant be that in mma so put the money there instead which is smart.

True their KB & MT is great but they are a dime a dozen and the promotions are not worth much Chatri say he has a billion dollar business and needs to show it. Cannot see him showing it without MMA.

Big event in Qatar, New season of The Apprentice (with big stars this season like Mikey Musumeci), New deal in the UK with Sky Sports. Things are looking up.

?

The article you posted says they did / are on pace for 59 in 2023.

Yes, but looked bad with no money by third quarter of 2024, so had no faith in them for 2024 as events cost money. But now with CAA backing and Sky things are looking up for them. But still in a wait and see mode as do not believe anything Chatri says.

ONE is like China, looking at their numbers, a collapse is always imminent. But it hasn't.
China is growing twice as fast as your country and TorontoTO has been predicting ONE's "imminent" bankruptcy for years.
