News: Referee Wiped Down Silva Before UFC 97 Bout

Referee Yves Lavigne says he wiped down Anderson Silva and got approval from Thales Leites’ corner prior to their main event bout Saturday at UFC 97.

An SI.com live blog observed that as Silva entered the Octagon, he rubbed lubricant -- applied to his face

Kind off topic but that fight was very boring because Leites wouldn't do anything but lay on the ground which is probably why the UFC cut him.

I hate that fighters do this. If you are going to fight them, then fight them. Grease obviously hinders grappling ability, taking away their opponents strength while they get to keep theirs. It should definitely be considered cheating and be added to the rulebook in my opinion. I lose a lot of respect for anyone who does this. It shows that you are afraid.

Yeah I hate this shit. Greasegate blah blah. Fact of the matter is Silva could have had grips attached to his skin and Thales still would have gotten his ass kicked. It just retarded some people logic that a insignificant amount of Vaseline could cause such a savage ass beating. It wasn't the Vaseline that cause his loss it was his poor gameplay and desire to sit on his ass the whole fight.

I wish they would let guys fight in their karate pajamas like back in the day.

this reminds me of when they disallowed 'stick-um' in the NFL years ago after Lester Hayes of the Raiders was known to use an entire jar of the stuff on his hands during a game.
