weight cutting
Hey Guys,
I am an amateur Mixed Martial Artist with a 2-0 record. I have fought at 170lbs and a cathcweight of 165lbs. I walk around at 180lbs. I am putting myself through a "Mock" 6-week training camp to simulate training for a real fight. I am attempting to make 155lbs. So far my diet has been pretty strict and I am eating 5-6 times a day with a high protein, low carb diet. I am only eating complex carbohydrates (whole grains), and I am trying to only eat them at the appropriate times. It seems to be working because I cut from weighing 181 lbs in the morning to weighing 173lbs in the morning in only a week and a half. Does anyone have any other helpful tips to aid my weight cutting. I just need to lose another 7-8 pounds before I start cutting water.

sounds so far, so good. Have you had you body fat % checked? If it's >10% you can begin incorporating fat burning exercises into your routine.
And make sure you are getting *enough carbs! They aren't evil, just avoid the super processed simples.

What height are you?
Also, what type of build are you, because you might not want to cut that much weight.
If you work out alot when you are dieting you will reach your optimum physical level but you might not ending up losing weight, just replacing fat with muscle.
One thing to stress is not to diet too much but your diet sounds pretty good to me. You might not want a very strict diet unless you are fighting soon. If you arent fighting soon take an easier diet to avoid stress etc.
Still, good luck in your training and don't kill yourself dieting, you should train mma to have fun.
On a side note how do i get that amateur fighter tag?

I'm 6'0 and about average thickness. but skinny legs. Im mostly seeing if I can make 155 and still function properly. Im trying not to life weights or anything like that to avoid putting on muscle.
BTW PM DrunkenMeatFist with your name and a reference of your fights and he'll hook you up with your tag.

From my experience, I replace all complex carbs with fibrous carbs (dark leafy greens and broccoli) two or three weeks out, depending on how I feel. Deplete glycogen stores, then do water weight.

I would not get any lower than 170. You can easily cut water weight to 155. What is the point in getting to 155 by dieting. You will end up losing muscle and that is not the object. If you will PM me I will give you a sodium load that will cut 7 to 12 pounds in a few days. I cut from 171 or so and it is not a problem. Please do not lose down to 160 or anything like that. If you have some fat then you can lose that and replace it with muscle. Weight cutting is a science for sure. But you need the weight. Fighting someone that walks at 175 and you walking at 160(not saying you are) can make a huge difference. The key in weight cutting is to put in what you take out. I applaud you for doing a test run and getting advice. You can never have to much info. I know my record is only 2-0 but my guys as a whole are like 34-5 so I do know a little def not alot though. Good luck in whatever you decide and just let me know if I can help.

I believe my percentage was around 15% when I was at 181. Now that i'm at 173. I dont know. Obviously I didn't lose only fat but it was probably a good percentage of fat.

Thanks man.
Getting to fight at 155 should be fine but like another guy said, dont go below 160. I'm only 5'7 but quite broad and my optimal weight would be about 135 so you should stay around 165. From there make sure you have the help of an experienced cutter and do not ever, EVER cut more than about 10 pounds if its same day weigh ins, but day before will be easy.
Good luck in fighting and post your next fight if you get a video.
