Training Question

I have a bit of an odd training question.

I always see training videos of fighters training with large gloves, and fighters kicking a pad attached to, or held by a trainer. Considering the MMA gloves are smaller than boxing gloves, and ther opponents arent holding pads, does this have any effect on their reach and distancing during the actual fight?

Those large gloves are probably boxing gloves are "training gloves". The pads are thai pads and they are just working on their kicks. It is not meant to be a distancing drill or anything, they're just isolating different aspects a fighter needs and working on them.

It's because 4 ounce gloves don't do all that much to protect the fighters hand. If they are hitting a heavy bag a fighter with a lot of power could easily get a "boxer's fracture" and not be able to train for 4 months. Training with large gloves is a much safer policy to protect their moneymakers.

Large gloves protect the hand a lot better than 4 ounce mma gloves. If a fighter were hitting a heavy bag with a lot of power and not using proper technique he could easily suffer a broken hand or a "boxer's fracture". They suck and take you out of training for like 3 months to let it heal, plus time to get strength back.

The larger gloves do protect the hand, but yes, in my experience, they do affect your distancing. I kickbox, but at my school we have some guys that take MMA fights. The first time I ever sparred with MMA gloves on, I was all kinds of messed up. I couldn't move anyone with my jab, and my right hand kept falling short. Of course, that was my first time ever wearing them, so I assume you just get used to it.

I think they generally wear them for protection (of the hand and the sparring partner) and for the same reason baseball players put weighted donuts on baseballs before stepping to the plate.

Boxing gloves increase your hand speed. More weight than mma gloves.

also, training with 16-18 ounce gloves is good for arm conditioning. imagine being lightning fast with 18 ouncers and then how fast and hard you would hit wearing the 4 ounce mma gloves.
