Is there a problem with my conditoning?

I had my 4th Muay Thai fight last night. 5x3 minute rounds and it went the distance and I won by uni dc.

I noticed during the second round I began to feel tired. Though I wasn't out of breath at all, my muscles just felt very heavy and though I was rattling my opponent with shots I couldnt put together combonations that were long enough to put him away even though I knew I could, I couldnt due to my muscles feeling so tired.

In the lead up to the fight I did 2 HIIT sessions a week on a spinner (15 seconds slow, 30 seconds fast), 2 Barbell complexes a week and 30 minute sessions on a cross trainer a week. Then trained every day too.

So my question is (and this is why I posted it in ask the fighters) is, Was it a problem with my conditioning in this fight or was this just my bodu dealing with the adrenaline dump badly. I never felt out of breath in the fight it's just my muscles. I was nervous about going into the fight as I was coming off my first loss.

So what do those of you who fight think?

if you're asking sherdoggers anything about getting off their asses and into the cage and fighting, than you're probably in the wrong forum.

Sounds like your body is over trained if it wasn't a cardio issue. Maybe lighten up on the training a little bit.

Well...its lactic acid removal vs build up. Lactic acid competes with metabolic and anabolic reactions needed for contraction.

Couple things. Watch your breathing and secondly, do not be tense and activate all your muscles. Even the best fighters in the world would tire if they were super tense for a long period of time. Just use muscles you need when you strike and relax as soon as you are out of range. Swimming is a good way to help the body get used to lactic acid removal. Also run 400 meter a few times a week if you have time.

Interval training if ya can as well.

Well my diet consists of chicken, rice and vegtables with the ocassional cheat meal, I didn't have to cut any weight to weigh in. I'm in Thailand right now so I train about 4-5 hours a day (without including conditioning) split between 2 sessions. I fought on the friday and trained up until the thursday before the fight as usual.

It did feel a bit like lactic acid build up. It wasnt as bad as when I do punch out drills on pads or a bag but it was somethign simmilar.

Also my hands were shaking after the fight, this is pretty usual for me. It also felt like my hearing was muffled and that's the first time that has happened after a fight. Anyone know what's up with that and if it was related to my problem?

Thanks for the replies.

Edit: I felt pretty relaxed in the ring. It was my 7th fight in total so I'm starting to get over the nerves. Though like I said I felt a bit nervous and tense as it was my first fighter after my first loss.

It more sounds like you trained to hard before the fight with the weak muscles. But if you didn't work out maybe thats a sign to start. Good luck.

How often are you fighting? Tapering your work out regimen is for people who compete every 3 months or 2 months. If you fight on a monthly basis then tapering really isn't going to do as much good as you'd hope it would. But obviously don't burn your gas tank the day before a big match.

I'm fighting pretty regularly at the moment I will have fought 6 times in about 4 months by september, at the moment I have fouht 4 times in about 2 and a half months.

I normally only take the day before the fight off and the day of the fight. I agree that tapering at my levle is not needed, along with massive weight cutting. It's just about racking up the fights.

From what you guys are saying it sounds like the problem is either my nerves making me tired quickly, or that my body isn't getting rid of lactic acid quick enough.

I know in sparring I can do 3 5 minute rounds pretty much on full blast and I will be tired at the end but not too bad. So this makes me think it may be my nerves especially as I was very scared of losing this fight.

Is there any tricks to help control nerves or do I just need more ring experience?

Also what training methods are good for getting the body to handle lactic acid better. I get shin splints badly so most forms of running I cannot do. I know someone mentioned swimming but I suck at that and I fight again in three weeks so I need results quick. Would more emphasis on barbell complexes help?
