SPORTSMEDICINE & Athletic Training in MMA: What HURTS???

Injuries plaque tons of athletes in all sports, especially the "contact" sports of today's era. I will not profess that I'm an EXPERT or MD or surgeon, but I have been in the sports medicine/athletic training/high performance training industry since 1988 and present. Athletes that I worked with, trained, consulted, and treated, are or retire from professional sports teams and international organizations. I do consider myself still today, as a "student of the industry" and keen to helping athletes who can not afford "care". Education, well I'm working towards my Doctorates plus numerous certifications. IF I CAN HELP, hit me up and I will do the best to assist, assess, and give a simple game plan to quick recovery to get back on the "mat"... Sorry, I will not offer diagnosis or give a prognosis and I don't have X-RAY EYES through the internet... yet...

Its "a" way/option, but not "the" way/option... Be patient, and we'll work on this for Speedy recover and see you on the sidelines...

Im getting surgery to repair two tendons in my shoulders, what is your estimation / suggestion for a rehab timeline besides going to a physiotherapist. Are steroids an option post surgery etc etc?

What do you do for hurt ankles? It cracked 2 months ago and swelled up real big. I thought it was ok and started BJJ again. It cracked and popped loud again. Im wearing an ankle brace now and looking for a sports doctor for rehab.

Any good sites or advice for rehab and getting better?

had acl reconstruction in right knee, now getting the left one done. Train in boxing/kickboxing/ and bjj, but am afraid of training in all again. Should I stick to boxing and basic techniues for bjj. competed in kickboxing and won't anymore, but should I cut the kickboxing TRAINING all together? Do you suggest a package including: ultra sound, radiant heat, and ice after surgery, or is it a waste of money (self treat, have degree in athletic training w/ some certificates)

I'm having the same problem right now. While i didn't crack mine (I don't think) but i did land on it awkardly from about a 2 ft drop and heard a loud pop. It is really painful when I turn it in certain directions and it makes kicking with that foot almost impossible.

Your physiotherapist, and hopefully he is a sports physiotherapist, after his assessment, will determine your recovery time and post surgery regime... becareful not to force rehab, because it can cause more tear and damage to your injury... Work with you ROM or range of motion... keep me posted... NO steriods are not an option... take your time and you will be on the mat soon than you think...

A third opion is always necessary, but self treatment is difficult due to the fact we are more harsh on ourselves than our trainers or physical therapist... knowing you're an athletic trainer, the answer is simple... if its money or insurance, than its a different story... but the PTs will take care of you... but that doesn't mean "self treatment" can't hurt... you still got to continue home "self treatment and ROM" and ice it down... Heat comes later with the eSTIM and ROM treatment... keep me posted...

Ankle injuries are one of the top for athletes beside the most unstable joint is the knee, but injuries are in 3 different levels... depending on the signs/symptoms and assessment. Usually the "pop" is a first degree with slight swelling... if it swells up like a baseball or softball with pain, then its a second degree, which means slight tear or stretch of ligaments... but if it swells up to a softball and it hangs or much pain, then it can be a third degree, which means the ligament have detached... Yes, ankles and joints crack, and without a MRI, its difficult to see whats wrong... OK, treatment: go back to the basics if its still swelling after workouts... ice and elevate for 20 minutes... another treatment is the SLUSH BUCKET... one ice bag, with slush water, stick ankle/submerge for 10 minutes in... its going to be nump... and then take out and walk around... do your ABCs in the bucket while your ANKLE is in there... it takes time to handle the ice, but, its the one option... if it still cracks, then go see a DR... another suggestion is to get it taped before practice or game... keep me posted...
