Old School vs New School: Which Are You?

Ok simple poll, my buddy trains at an mma gym learning everything but not really being incredible at anything. Where as I train strictly jiujitsu with some but not much stand up.

His thinking is being a jack of all trades but a master of none, where I like having a solid base in one skill and building on top of that.

Which Were you (if your a fighter) or which makes the most sense to you (if your not a fighter)?

A lot of the champions seem to have mastered one art, but then added to it later. (Machida, Anderson, Lesnar) so that's gotta be the way to go.

I wrestled all through high school and then added bjj during but really hit it off after high school in bjj. Now my instructor is teaching me standup and he insists on teaching me the whole thing all at once while adapted to my wrestling. So i guess im sort of a product of both

I think it depends on the person.

The person who has a solid base in one skill and builds from there usually has more success. Look at the wrestlers like Couture and Hughs, or the BJJ guys like Maia and Penn. When you get hurt in a fight you usually fight with the style you're best at right? I know I do...

Seems like mastering 1 is the way to go until you get higher up. Lot's of amatures are pretty well rounded but they are bad at everything so a pure BJJ guy would tool until you meet up with a good wrestler who has training some striking art.

Get really proficient at one aspect/one art that way when your well roundness is matched, you can always fall back on your base.

I personally train all aspects of the game and prefer it that way, however, I learn quicker at the ground game than I do in my stand up. Haven't lost yet so it must be working ;)

I have trained in wrestling my whole life with very little striking and zero BJJ. But then again I am not a fighter.
