Hello, My name is John and I just moved to Ontario California. I am extrememly interested in competitive fighting and I am looking for any information as to how someone with no background can become actively involved with the sport. Aside from finding a gym and training with MMA masters. Is there anyway to register in any events as an independant freestyle fighter? (with no gym) and fight in a designated weight class as an amatuer? It sounds crazy, but thats how motivated I am for the sport.

John

Its not crazy but it is the harder row to hoe. Getting quality training with a solid camp is the best way to be successful in the long run.

In many amateur events there are independant fighters. Some do well others never return to the ring. If your going to do the independant thing I would still seek out training from quality coaches in the many aspects of MMA. A quality grappling and striking coach are highly recommended. But just because you train with them it doesn't mean they own you either which is were the more successful independants come from. They work with quality teams but manage their own schedules.

Johny Boy,
You can totally just contact a promoter and tell him you want to fight another guy with little experince and a good promoter should match you up with a similar skill level fighter. Make sure he doesn't give you a very experienced fighter he is trying to build! Even if you lose your opening match you will meet a lot of people at the show and if you show that you can hang (even in defeat) you should get the hook ups.
At the very least b4 you get in the cage get some friends to go running or wrestle with you and see if they will hold pads

Thanx guys, that is really good useful information and I appreciate the brevity in many of the responeses. I will definately look more into the independant aspect but with proper training. I actually looked into a gym right down the road from me known as West Coast Jiu Jitsu specializing in BJJ and submission wrestling. I think its a good start for me. I hope to compete sometime this year, that is my ultimate goal. 170-180lbs

I would guess that most people aren't cutting much more than 10 lbs. to make weight. I think more than that would be pretty hard for someone that weighs like 160 to cut to 145. Who is the promoter for your fight?
