i got a double custom made because i have braces. Now the thing about these is, The guy only put like 5 holes in the front for air flow. And breathing is pretty hard. If anything im going to use a Xacto knife and make one big hole in the middle to breathe through.

Sucks cus i dropped like 350 on this thing.

Also it tastes like chalky bitter spearmint. But it fits fucking great.

What I don't understand is when people who are "pro single" say that a double restricts your breathing. I have used both (although I have never had a custom) and it's damn near impossible to get any air in whatsoever through a single with your jaw closed. If you're forced to open your mouth to breathe how is that mouthguard protecting you at all, regardless of how perfectly it fits to your upper teeth?

I have been interested in buying a custom single just to try it out, but it would be a pretty costly "experiment". There's no doubt in my mind that it will be the best fitting mouthguard I'll ever own, but if I have to open my mouth to breathe, what's the real benefit? I've read damn near every mouthguard thread on here and there's rarely any discussion on how breathing is affected by a custom single when your jaw is clinched.

I've seen that Gladiator has a "combat" version of their guard that they make for the IFL. It's thicker on the molars which gives you a space to breathe in the front (when clinched), but it seems that your bottom front teeth wouldn't contact the guard. Still seems better than most custom singles when it comes to breathing. Also, do you guys that have customs find it difficult to put your lower impressions on the guard?

I'm definitely interested in getting a custom single one day, but I've been rocked in sparring and smokers and I've never had any issues with my $20 Brain-Pad.

One thing i WILL say about customs. They hug your teeth perfectly. Makes me want to bite down on it all the time.

I got a rugby mouthguard from foxsports shit is lovely not like the boil and bite everlast mouthguards. Those mouthguards suck.

I want a custom mouthguard with fangs like Arlovski... but I can't find a custom website and I'm a fighter on a budget so my plain mouthguard will do. LOL

why would you want to breathe through your mouth in the first place? That's the number one way to get K.O'ed breathe through your nose man. I'm pretty sure you can breathe through your mouth with a single top mouthguard. I know I can. I never tried the double mouthguard though.

I boxed for 3 years and I always used the one that just covers the top teeth, always seemed alot more comfortable to wear than the bulky double guard.

I'm not reffering to breathing through my mouth with my mouth open (K.O. waiting to happen for sure), with a double you can breathe through your mouth the whole time your jaw is clenched.

My argument/question is how are custom singles (no matter how well they fit) considered safer and all around better than doubles if you have to open your mouth to get any decent amount of oxygen in? You say that you can breathe through your mouth with your jaw clinched wearing a custom single, then that sounds like it works for you, but it seems to work on a case by case basis because I've read on here that a lot of people can't (I sure couldn't breathe through my mouth very well wearing a BnB single with my jaw clinched).

To address the breathing through your nose thing, I do breathe through my nose as much as I can but there comes a point when you have to suck in more air than your nose will allow, unless your cardio is worlds above mine (which is entirely possible, I'm not out of shape but I'm not in excellent shape either). Whenever I see guys with custom singles (or any singles for that matter) training/fighting there inevitably comes a point where they open their mouth to suck in a lot of air at once, leaving them open for a lot of damage. I've never really had that problem wearing a double, I can get enough air the whole time through my nose and mouth to not make me un-clinch my jaw.

This is just something that I have been wondering about that never really gets addressed in the custom mouthguard discussions because I've been considering buying one.

custom guards and breathing

SamuraiBlack a brief explanation of how the custom works. The mouth is a rear hinged devise much like a door. If you place a pencil between the the back of the door and the door jam then close the door you will notice that the rear (near the hinges) is open the amount of the thickness of the pencil, however the part of the door with the handle is open several feet.

The same principal works with a mouthguard, if the guard is 4-5mm thick throughout ( over the edges of the front teeth as well as the bitting surfaces of the back teeth) the thickness at the back of the mouth will open the front of the mouth at a ratio of about 3 to 1. For every 1mm you open the rear of the mouth you open the front 3mm, so no matter how tight you clench the front will always hold open a breathing space.

I prefer Gladiator as they have the longest track record in the business and excellent reputation for customer service. As well as being less expensive than other providers.
