take time off, spend the next few months, eating healthy, doing more cardio, and weights, study up on whatever techniques and shadow box.

Remember being able to hear your coaches is an advantage in sparring/ fighting etc is something you don't want to have more trouble with.

Go to an audiologist and have them make you a molded ear plug. You're gonna want to avoid getting any water in there or it could make you really dizzy and uneasy. My mom is an audiologist and I perforated my ear drum when i was wrestling. Nothing too horrible but all you can really do is wait and keep it clean. Showering is gonna be a pain in the ass for a while. It took me about 3 weeks to fully heal. Q-tips really aren't made to be put in your ears, I've been hearing that since i was a little kid.

I've had some ear damage..actually a similar situation as yours, but i just hate doctors...I used ear guards (like wrestlers) for bout 6 months and everything was good..I put a clean sterilized piece of cotton every time before I trained and then added the ear guards...everything was A-ok...but thats just me, hope that helps.

Though I would not recommend fighting (three weeks is not long enough) I can tell you that your eardrum will recover fully. I ruptured an eardrum and let it fully recover and in all honesty my hearing is now better than ever. The bones of your inner ear are the strongest in your body, and do a good job of protecting the muscles and (more importantly) blood vessels that make up the inner ear. While it is unlikely that a punch or kick would cause permanent damage much like the brain once the inner ear is hurt if it is not allowed time to heal it is definitely not hard to re-injure.

As long as your equilibrium is fine you SHOULD be ok to fight, the damage is likely localized to a specific part of the drum. It's really up to you, if you feel like you can fight, go for it, if you have any doubts (whatever the doctors told you about brain damage was not explained properly , it would have to be a very absurd scenario) than don't fight.

I am not qualified to give medical advice. I would only like to wish you a safe and speedy recovery.

I bust my left tympanic membrane (ear drum) a month ago. Here are some tips.

1) make sure you see a doctor often, an infection could happen at any part of the ear (i.e. inner, middle, outer). Nothing hurts worse then an outer ear infection (ear canal), and you don't want to be dizzy from a inner ear infection.

2) when you are around water use swimming ear plugs to keep water out

3) avoid smoke and driving with the windows down

4) when you get back into training, always wear a good set of wrestling ear protectors, even when striking, if you are against boxing heard gear that is.

I hope you are not relying too heavily on Sherdoggers for medical advice... I don't think there are that many med school graduates on here... Hope you recover dog, sounds like a tough break.
