I did my first San Shou after about 9 months of training, and was horribly unprepared (although I still won).
I did my first grappling tournament after just over 2 years.
I'm at 2.5 years now, and I still haven't gotten into the cage, and don't feel nearly close to the level I'd want to be.

What was your base? What other martial arts did you add to your arsenal, and for how long did you work on it?

I became in love with the sport of MMA only as a young boy. I was only 6 years old when i started watching UFC and I just fell in love with it. I didnt start my training until the end of my junior year in high school and i am currently a senior. I havent fought yet but I plan to at the end of summer. I really never had a base i just came into the sport of MMA and ive been working on it for a year now at Agallar Combative Systems(ACS). So when the time comes for me to fight ill be ready.

I had no base before I started training (I was a soccer player!). Trained 4-6 nights a week for just over a year in boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, and muay thai, did about 4 jiu jitsu tournaments both gi and no gi and then got my first fight.

How do you feel your San Shou training will help you in mma?

If your fighting Jersey or PA rules its not really MMA anyway so go for it. It's kickboxing with sub grappling!

Echo this. I was a state finalist in FL in wrestling (NOT a top wrestling state) then moved to Scotland. Trained MMA 2 hours/day 6 days a week for 4 months before my first and only amateur fight 4 years ago. Never did find all my teeth. You have to be VERY CAREFUL at amateur fights. The guy I was supposed to fight, it was going to be his first fight too. But so many guys back out at the last minute, it ridiculous. Decent organizers have fighters on standby that will jump in at a moments notice if necessary. The guy I ended up fighting, it was his 8th amateur fight, and he had a sick MT background. I can still taste his knee after 4 years. Also, ask about what the medical provisions are in the event of injury. There were none in place where I fought. I had to have a friend drive me to a hospital where I had to actually wait until the next day before a dental guy could even look at me.
My advice, don't even have an amateur fight unless you are seriously considering a pro career.
