I had no background and I had my first fight at 1 1/2 months.

By the end of this month I will have had 4 fights in my first 8 mos.

they stop amateur fights so fast that you aren't in serious danger for anything besides road rash. amateur is just practice anyway, take as many fights as you can.

Really your coach should be able to tell you if he thinks you're ready. I'm a coach myself and you see guys pick stuff up at very different speeds. The coach should also be pretty familiar with the local shows and the level of competition as well as some of the other trainers that send guys to that show so they know the level of the "green" guys that come out of that gym.

I can't speak for Oregon and if you don't fight well in MMA your obv. going to get fucked up but i don't count a busted up face or a broken nose as super serious injuries, although i guess people prettier than i am might.

At my gym (which is very new as far as these things go, but with very experienced coaches) some of our first guys are starting to have their amateur fights after about a year and a half to 2 years of training.

Our coaches say that they want to see very solid boxing fundamentals and footwork, as well as solid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on at least a blue belt level before we start fighting. I think way too many gyms rush in people who are untrained to fight frankly, at least in my area.

I think fighting early would save alot of ppl alot of money. Ive seen guys train years then have thier first fight and never train or fight again. I say fight early and see if its something you really wanna put time and money into... even if you lose you will know right away if you want to do it some more.

Trained krav maga for about a year, got into jiu jistu pretty heavy for about 4 months, did grapplers quest. then picked up on the muay thai in december, first fight in march, 2nd fight last weekend. Like everyone is saying, get the basics down and get in the ring, its just an amateur fight, and you learn sooo much in the ring that the gym wont teach you. my opinion anyway

probably 6 months before my fight, but I didn't train at a gym, just sparred with buddies from other disciplines here and there, so not to serious...didn't do too bad, but the lack of real full contact experience was my downfall
