Fight Dentist

I just got my molded fight dentist mouth piece in the mail and I have a few questions for anyone who has one, this is my first custom mouth guard. First it fits really snug kinda feels like I have freshly tightened braces on (those who have wore braces know what im talking about). and second when I bite down only my molars touch the mouth guard leaving a little gap on my front teeth when im clenching. My question is, is this normal?

I wasn't super impressed with mine. They fit fine, but the graphic that I choose was inserted as a peice of paper that was printed on paper. The fit depends on how well you followed directions when making the mold.

Your bottom teeth are not going to fit perfectly into your mouthguard because the impression kit is only designed for an upper impression. That is normal...I have a Stars Guard (custom) and they are created from a mold impression kit. The fit should be snug and unable to come out without trying to remove it. That is one of the upsides to having a custom. Now, if you are experiencing any discomfort/pain, I would contact the vendor.

I have a fight dentist custom guard that fits great.

Did you make the bottom impression according to the instructions that should have come with the guard? Essentially, it requires you to heat the bottom of the guard (it requires a pair of pliers or tongs to hold only the bottom in boiling water for something like 30 seconds) like a boil and bite, then placing it in your mouth and biting down to make the bottom impression, following up with submersion in cold water to set the bottom mold. That should take care of your gap.

With respect to the graphics, mine came out well and I'm generally pleased (although it was nothing too complex). I believe the total cost was $199. Now that they have my dental mold on file additional guards are $150 (or something like that).

From a dentist and former fighter's POV.....

(misread the original post - thought you had braces on currently)....

The fit should be very snug and tight with proper extension. Otherwise, you won't have enough coverage or too much slack, which will have the mouthguard pop off. That "tightened braces" feeling is what you really want to ensure you have a good fit.

Depending on the style of mouthguard, there may or may not be a space in the front, with teeth contacting only on the back (look at the shock doctor posterior bite pad type). Depending on how it's made, you can impress to have the bottom teeth fit into the mouthguard. Otherwise, you're more likely to bite on the back.

As a fighter - personal preference was ringside's Brainpad or the shockdoctor with the posterior bite pad (both boil 'n bites).

As a dentist - any custom made one that encorporates an upper and lower mold, with a space encorporated in the front for breathing while clenching.
