Enson, I hope this message finds you doing well. I haven't had a chance to post here much, but wanted to say that I briefly spotted you at the Shooto show where Baret fought Hioki Hatsu in March, but didn't get a chance to say hello before his fight (didn't want to bother. I had meant to stop by the Omiya gym, but didn't get around to it again. In December though, i'll be back in Japan and will make sure to make a stop in. By the way, could the referee in Baret's fight have been more of a moron by re-centering Baret after he escaped the tight armbar by dragging him by his bad arm to the center of the ring? Shoddy stuff..
Nevertheless, I did notice something very encouraging though at that show in the brief moments I spotted you and that was both Rumina and Uno Kaoru both went out of there way to stop by, speak with you, and seemed extremely respectful. Seeing this level of kohai respect was a very cool thing in an age when successful athletes often ignore those that paved the way for them.
Hope you guys had an awesome time at Dream!

Yeah the ref could have had a tad bit of better timing but being the ref is the hardest job in the house and I believe he made his best decision.
As far as the kohai respect Rumina and Uno gave me...it just shows their humbleness and respect they have of me. I really like those guys. i also get mad respect from almost all the fighters throughout the world. It's flattering to have guys like Forrest, Rampage, Randy, Randleman, Coleman, Frye, Vanderlei, etc cmoe to say hello whenever I run into them in an event. Makes me respect them even more.

I agree that being a ref is a tough job and usually Shooto refs are the best. I guess I was just a bit upset that Baret got put in a tough situation after he had that incredible armbar escape. Nevertheless, I thought Baret competed with tremendous fighting spirit and never quit even though he was fighting one of the best guys in the world after taking 4 years off from kakutogi. I look forward to seeing him back in a Shooto ring soon.
I'm very happy your peers and students continue to give you mountains of respect. You, Nakai Yuki, Sakuraba and TK have been four of the most influential fighters and trainers that Japan has ever seen. If it was not for you guys paving the way by having local and international success, Japanese fighters like Kawajiri, Aoki, Yamamoto KID, Uno, Rumina, Sakurai Mach, Ishikawa, Ganjo and countless others that you have trained, or are connected to, would've never had the platform in Shooto and then in K-1/Pride to really become stars. It's was great to see that someone who has had the all-around success as Uno recognized and sincerely appreciated that.
Keep up the great work on your blog too! Love seeing all your photos from your travels..
