To Eddie Bravo, Question about the rubberguard

Hello Eddie

I got your two books jiu jitsu unleashed and Mastering the rubbergaurd and now also your dvd and I like it a lot. I implemented a lot of your techniques into my gameplan and will use it also in MMA. I still need some work on my flexibility but it allready works well.

But a lot of time I still got the same problem:
I wanna go to rubberguard, but my opponent is in my closed guard and has wrapped both arms around my head and he is pretty high on me (not because he smoked ). For me, the rubberguard works best when my opponent has his face on my stomach or the chest. But if he is in the situation I described first how do you get him down? Cause from that position I am not able to put my feet on his hip. I could get my feet up there to go to the rubberguard but I don't have a good control then. So how do you react from that situation?

no guard works 100% of the time. if you are getting stacked with your opponents hands off the mat, you must go to butterfly sweeps to either sweep or trap your opponents hands on the mat when he bases to defend the sweep. if he's stacking you but has a hand on the mat, trap it there by hugging the knee and get to chill dog immediately. you cant get stacked in chill dog

Thanks for your answer, Eddie. In fact I never tried to go right away to chill dog. I'll give it a try as soon as I can get back to training, I just broke my right hand. And it will take some time

Eddie already dropped by, but I have another thing I do. If they are high (and not stacked), I put my feet on their hips and push down. At the same time I walk my shoulders back and then it's easier for me to get them in mission control.

The case I was asking for is when they are so high on you, that you dont get your feet on their hips. Once you get the foot on their hips it's easy.

awesome question. on my last tournament my opponent was very much taller than me and he kept going really high and just stalling. i am very flexible so i ended up pulling my right foot into his knee just for a second and he got off balance and planted the hand on the mat...from there i was able to get position to sweep. you can get away with something like that with some thats not very experienced. have you gotten through all of "mastering the rubberguard"?

i never thought i could learn something from a book, but its amazing how you can put the stuff into practice in the mat, Eddie is a badass

I've been out of active jiu jitsu practice for a few months because of injuries. But I did purchase Mastering the Rubber Guard and I have been studying it. I have implemented all of his stretching techniques and within the last month I have already increased my hip and knee flexibility. I knew my hips would get flexibile again, but I never thought I could get my stiff knees to have more range in movement. But alas, the stretching techniques work.

I also watched a video on Youtube where Bravo was discussing the importance of flexibility and he was showing how to improve the butterfly stretch. He mentioned that he wouldn't award a black belt to one of his students unless they were able to perform the butterfly stretch to a certain degree. I can understand what he's saying so I am now striving to get to the point in that stretch that he was talking about (where you can pull your feet into your groin while the outside of your knees touch the ground).

I also like Eddie's "whip up" technique from half guard. I know that's basic rubber guard stuff, but you got to get the fundamentals down before you can move on to the more complex stuff.
