'm in law school right now and I'm hoping to specialize in contract/entertainment law for the sole purpose of representing MMA fighters later on and helping them out as much as I can.

I hate hearing stories of fighters getting screwed or having shady representation
Man, if you put together a good Firm doing that then you'd be in SERIOUS business. If you ever come to Vegas, let me know. I can probably give you about 100 guys who'd hire you at the drop of a hat.

Good representation to keep the Promoters in-check is what's missing, the way the NFL, NBA, and MLB law-dogs do their thing. What's failing the fight-game right now is the Athletes, not the Promoters. Like in Boxing how the WBC tried to skip Vitali Klitschko straight to a Title Shot upon his coming out of retirement over "mandatory" #1 Contender Samuel Peter who had to fight the same guy twice to get the #1 Contender status. Sam sued and hard-checked the ever-corrupt WBC. He won. More Fighters could follow that example because without Fighters to extort, Sanctioning bodies and Promotional Companies go out of business eventually.

Very good read.

I'm like "damn this is long as hell"

I ended up finishing it, and I enjoyed it, very useful information.

I hope to be a fighter some day (I'm only 16) so this was helpful information, thanks.

Great post however I think you saying you should know who your opponent is 3 months in advance. What about when Pride/Dream do not even let the fighter know 2 weeks in advance? Do you consider that reckless or just the way they promote fights? Bc I am sure that thousands of guys would take the shot to fly to Japan without knowing who they are fighting.

I think that situation is a little different.

In a smaller promotion you aren't fighting for the big bucks, you're fighting mostly for experience. You don't want to fight someone that's had 40 plus fights more than you, and is in a whole other league, it isn't beneficial.

If you're in Dream, you can be pretty sure your opponent is top tier, and you'll have to be prepared for pretty much everything.

man, trust me, I've been following the MMA scene for a long ass time, ever since I was a kid training kickboxing and caught the UFC by fluke on ppv with my father. I love this sport more than anything, and if I can do my part to help I will for sure.

I've practically given up on becoming a fighter myself, because I simply don't have the time to train. However, if I can work on representing fighters it will be just as sweet for me, and I'd be giving back in my own way. Unfortunately there are many years of hard work ahead before I can put this plan into fruition.

Ah well, if it's meant to be, it will happen.

edit: also, it would be my dream to live and work in Las Vegas or California hehehe

I was in LA and San Fran a couple of months ago, it's a whole different world out there compared to here in Montreal.

The Fighters hold all the cards. It's poor management why they dont make more. Most fighters dont know any better. They take what's offered instead of telling promoters to shove it. I fight for this or else. In the 80's fighters told promoters that if they wanted to have a fight you better pay me XYZ.
Gotta disagree here I'm afraid - MMA is like anything where there is more supply than demand - the fighters don't hold all hte cards at all, unless you are a big draw or crowd puller you mean literally nothing to the promoter, if you ask for too much cash he can just draw for the next person on his list, end of problem lol.

Thanks for hte post KK, informative.
