I think most people miss the point of the running drills MMA fighters do. The results should not surprise you much. It's mostly mental training, trying to accomplish the near impossible no matter how hard or how tough it is. MMA is on a very high physical level, hence I even expect that these guys will push their physical/mental training to new lengths as they are now.
Personally, I hate running, rarely do it, it bores the hell out of me. But I remember a year ago when I was trying to run a mile in 5:30 min, just to see if I can do it. What I learned is that if you motivate yourself and tough it out, you can pull off feats you previously thought were impossible. Took me about 2-3 months, as I always stay in shape, it was a matter of pushing through the pain.
Of course, once I did it, I stopped running. Did not want it anymore, no more reason. But it did make me understand the mental training aspect better.
