Question about Broken Hands

I broke my hand in my second MMA fight. I punched the guy in the head. I snapped my second ****carpal in two (the finger next to your thumb). It was a clean break not a fracture. I had to bet some hardware inserted into the hand to aid in the healing.

What I was wondering from you guys that fight, how long did you stay out until you fought again? It's been two weeks since the pin and rod was removed from my hand, just pretty much waiting for the stitches to heal. The doctor says it's fully healed and that it should be stronger than it was originally. Is that usually the case? I've heard of people re-breaking their hands again, just wanted to see what I may be in for.

Thanks in advance.

My brother is a boxer and he broke his in a fight and he says it feels less solid when he punches and he has broken it twoce since. So good luck with that!

That Sux! Up until my injury, I threw my right with reckless abandon. I guess I've really got to pick and choose my shots in the future. Anybody else had and luck with broken or fractured hands? I've got a AM Title fight next month.

more than anything, give it the time it needs and deserves to heal. fighters are inherently stubborn, and we love to be tough guys. you have a certain amount of time that it will need to heal properly... push it, or try to get away with anything, and you may end up with a more dire injury, and even more time off.

once you do return to training, you may want to adjust your hand wraps when you practice striking. google the different methods or ask someone knowledgeable around where you train. when you do your wraps, you can do 2-5 extra lays atop the knuckles to provide a little more cushion.

best of luck

I have never broken a bone but if you look at history of boxers or MMA guys certain people seem to break their hands more often (Calzaghe, Mayweather). There are two possible answers to this. One is some people's technique makes them more susceptible to broken hands. The other is some people have small hands and brittle bones and tend to break easier. The other possablity is you just happened to hit a guy on the top of the head or a hard part of his head where everybody would break their hand if they connected. I don't think anyone in this forum will be able to give you a proper answer because they haven't seen your hand or the actual punch Everybody's situation is different.

That is the worst advice ever. Let it heal or it will break again. And when it does feel strong enough wrap a few extra layers on top of your knuckle. The reason you wrap it to your wrist is to attach the small bones in the hand to the larger bones in the wrist. And try using the knuckle pads when you're just hitting the bag. I've broken my hands a few times due to being stubborn and not letting it heal. It will screw you over in the end.

I'm no doctor, but I'd imagine, all other things constant, that a broken hand will always be weaker than it was originally.
