Not in a natural science class I don't think but in a religious studies class or even sociology I think it deserves some attention to raise the awareness of the topic.

You have to admit though, that HIV argument cuts both ways. If ID is true then god designed HIV. If god designed HIV then I think its safe to say he hates gays and blacks. What an awesome god.

I agree.
I think it's a mistake to even talk in terms of 'design'.
ID can't tell you anything about the 'designer', such as where it came from, what it is composed of, etc. Nor can it say to what end or purpose anything has been designed.
I don't really see what ID has to offer at all, other than casting doubt on natural selection.
