What do you believe?

I'm bored so why not start another thread on religion/philosophy. I'm just wondering what people's philosophical/religious beliefs are and how you came to adopt those beliefs. If you are Christian, why are you christian? If you are athiest, why are you athiest? Did you think and form your own beliefs? Did certain events in your personal history lead you to your beliefs? I'm just curious.

I don't want this to be another atheism vs religion debate. Most of those threads turn into shit and fuck you if you turn my thread into shit. I can do that myself. If someone says he's christian, I would prefer it if you wouldn't try to insult his religion. I also hope some you religious folks wouldn't try to convert us either. Once again, please don't fuck up my thread.

I grew up Roman Catholic. I went to Catholic school until 3rd grade. They wanted to hold be back because I read slower than they liked, so I switched to Public school. My Mother grew up in a strict RC family with 7 siblings. She was taught public school was the DEVIL! Typical Roman Catholic everyone is going to hell stuff.

I believed in God because I was told so. In highschool I realized I don't have to believe in something because someone told me to.

So now I don't believe in it.

For me, if there is no God, then all of life is an unbearable dread.

I was never baptised and brought up to believe in anything but myself. I didn't care as a kid and thought the world revolved around me.

A shitty upbringing and that attitude is what made me an alcoholic and drug addict as a young teenager all the way up until the age of 23.

When I got sober, I learned to believe in a higher power and that I wasn't the greatest thing walking the earth. After trusting and beliving in something bigger and better than me, I was able to get clean (over five years now.)

Today, I am very spiritual and believe in God because it gets me to look outside of myself and not be so selfish and understand that people in this world have it a lot worse than me when I feeling sorry for myself. Now I believe that no matter what happens to me in life, God has a plan and things will always work out the way they are supposed to. I can only blame myself when I come up short.

Although, to this day, I still don't affiliate myself with any organized religion. I don't hate on them because they work well for a lot of people. However, I think that there is too much corruption in a lot of churches and a lot of people are hypocritical that claim to be religious. I stick to my own personal spirituality.

We live inside a computer program anyway.
Sounds kinda like my story except I was raised protestant. Typical religious household where they try to cram their beliefs down your throat. I went through a lot of switching back and forth from athiesm, to agnostic to religious again. I thought religion was flawed but a part of me couldn't shake away the years of indoctrination. I felt like I was doign something wrong by questioning christianity. I don't believe in Christianity anymore because a lot of it doesn't make much sense to me. But a lot of it also has to do with being sick of being told what to believe. I might feel the same way about athiesm if my parents were athiest.

Was raised Christian, being young and told to by my parents. Went to church often, did the whole prayer before bedtime, before eating thing, hung up crosses, pictures of Jesus, did a bunch of ignorant stupid religious groupthink stuff I didn't think too hard on until I got older. That's when I actually started thinking for myself, and I came to the conclusion it was a bunch of horseshit.

Im an atheist purely because of all of the terrible arguments that most religions put forward., particularly creationists. I dont see how any religions can be good when they nearly all hold back science, progression and logic. As well as the countless wars and deaths they have caused.

Because of this i dont believe in any of them

Interesting. I went through that "I'm better than other people" stage when I was a Christian. I thought I was better than other people because I'm a better Christian than they were and if god's on your side than fuck everybody else. When I had problems I would be bitter towards god for it. I think arrogance is more of by-product of being young and stupid than not believing in a higher power.

As an atheist I feel more humbled because I'm just another organism in this vast universe.

Well, we're all born athiest until someone tries to convince us otherwise.
