Anybody watch MLS?

I watched a game the other night and it was actually kind of exciting. Apparently the league is not all that great, but their "not world class" skills led to a high scoring game with no diving or other behavior that people are right to mock soccer for and it was worth watching.

three questions for people who follow the sport:

-Who are the best players in the MLS? I know beckam, donovan and blanco, is there anybody else
-What teams do MLS teams play in other leagues? They are not going to be playing top english teams right now, but do they play teams from other countries
-Why don't the owners of the teams go out and get the best forwards in the world? Forget about defense, just go out and sign people who will score a bunch of goals

I don't watch religiously but I've been following futbol/soccer for over 15 years now. Here's my opinions on the best MLS players:

-Shalrie Joseph
-Brad Guzan
-Landon Donovan
-Luciano Emilio
-Michael Parkhurst (best defender in MLS)

Because to move to America is to effectively retire from top level football. No-one who wants to play for their country or who has any ambition in the game will move to America.

- Dwayne De Rosario is pretty good. Toronto FC just got this guy Laurent Robert is pretty good as well. I have to admit I don't know the players very well.

- Some MLS teams play Mexican teams in this thing called the Superliga, I don't know much about that. Also in the summer some European teams come to N. America for friendlies against MLS teams

- There is a salary cap in MLS. Each team is allowed one "designated player" and there is ono limit to what they can pay him. This is why the Galaxy can sign Beckham.

I enjoy watching MLS. For a North American soccer fan, it's nice not having to wake up at seven in the morning to watch a match.

Pretty good response. The MLS is still struggling to establish itself as a good alternative to the other recognizeable sports. The fact that the league is still in existence is a testament to the slow growth. Having a TV deal (and maybe w/HDNet if I remember) and the ability to get players in the tail end of their careers to play in the States helps with the exposure.

He's a skilled player... no doubts there. But he's horrible for a team. He's got a reputation as being completely disruptive and prone to sulking and complaining whenever possible.

speaking of TV deals ESPN has a MLS Thursday nights.

They're also broadcasting the Team USA games with an on-site pre and post game show.

So in short...ESPN is trying to expand MLS. Not sure if it will ever catch on but the league does have the Sports TV monster on their team.

Also...I kinda watch the Earthquakes play. More like the highlights but its entertaining. I'll probably attend the Galaxy game when they come out here.

But only if Beckam is playing

I try to attend Galaxy games on a consistent basis. The food is horrible and pricey and everyone screaming whenever Beckham touches the ball gets a bit annoying, but it's fun nonetheless
