What is the appeal of NASCAR/Oval Racing?

I am a huge motorsport fan. I've been going to my local circuit since the age of 8 to watch cars, bikes, sidecars, rallying. I've made trips to Silverstone, Spa and Magny-Cours for GPs, been to karting events, rallycross in a muddy field...

But i still can't understand the appeal of Nascar. I understand that there are some circuit races, but its the oval races that get me. Its so many laps of going around and around. Ok, some of the crashes are spectacular, but you get that in other motorsport as well. Then after a few (hundred) laps, you can't tell who is where.

Unfortunately, its the only motorsport on tv for the next month, so i need to have my mind changed. How much driver skill is involved? What is the appeal?

What Nascar could be like:

What your racing could be -

This is a single car by the way in practice, not even a multi-car crash

That's the first time I saw NASCAR's COT in a very nastry crash. I'm amazed the driver walked away from that type of crash.

The TS posted a highlight video of car crashes, so I did too. Which crash was more exciting?

It's the side-by-side racing. A lot more exciting than the 10+ seconds gap between 1st and 2nd place in F1
