Trading draft pick for cash in NBA

Can anyone explain this to me?

Portland traded cash for NO first round pick, where does that money come from?

Is there a reason not many teams do this?

the max you can trade is like 3 million.

You will find that the teams that do this are usually in cities that don't deserve a basketball team (New Orleans), teams that have no roster space (San ANtonio), or a team with an owner deathly afraid of the luxury tax (Phx).

Everyone doesn't do this because most teams are committed to winning, not just committed to pimping out Chris Paul as their slave and raping profit.

This year might have been the first time in a while Phx didn't sell their pick.

If there wasn't that 3 million cap on these transactions then the Mavs, Knicks, and Blazers would just buy every pick.

NO trading their pick this year really pissed me off. Their team overachieved this year, and Paul's supporting cast isn't going to magically get better. Peja and Peterson can only get worse, while most of the West is going to keep improving their roster. It hurts me to seea city that doesn't deserve to have a team, while there are great fans in the North West who are losing their team when they actually support them.

The hornets traded the pick that ended up being Arthur, or they could have picked Sonny Weems or Donte Greene who would have been unstoppable scorers in the fast paced Chris Paul system.

there are some cities that just aren't right for certain pro sports. Charlotte will never support a professional basketball team because that area is owned by college basketball. New Orleans will never have a successful basketball team because that area is a predominately football area. Los Angeles will never have a successful football team because it is a baseball and basketball town. The only cities that can transcend these divides are world powerhouse cities like NYC and Toronto.

New Orleans has no money, because the fans don't give a shit about the team.

So they sold their draft pick.

Thats essentially rock bottom when you have a team. The only way it could get worse is if NO wasn't making the playoffs. Then the team would end up being moved somewhere else.

A late pick also will take a few years to develop. By selling the pick, the hornets will use the roster spot and cap space for a veteran who can do more to help them win now.

The problem is they have no cap space for players like that.

I agree that NO doesn't deserve a NBA franchise.
