Liverpool's defence really is as good as any in the league, why do you say that out of interest.? I think the one place we need to improve is at left-back because Riise is done & Aurelio is injury-prone.

RB is going to be a problem too. Finnan hasn't been Mr Dependable as in previous years. The centre is fine, as is the centre of midfield. It's wide players generally that we are lacking both midfield and defence.
Edit - a fit and in form Agger would be nice also, please.

They have the players available, i just feel that it lacks the quality required for a top club. If Agger can stay healthy next season than CB shouldn't need any reinforcements.
Hyypia has showed this season that even though he's absurdly slow, he can still do the job, Skrtel has settled in nicely and Hobbs will be back from his loan.
I really don't rate Arbeloa. I think he'd be good back up for a new RB but he hasn't done enough to convince me. Also, like you said Riise is probably leaving and Aurelio is injury prone so left back needs a look at as well. Liverpool also have Emeliano Insua who is a left back, but we (I) havn't really seen much of him to make a fair judgment.
I remember a few months ago that FC Schalke right back Rafinha was linked in a move to Liverpool. I don't have Setanta sports so i can't watch the Budesliga but from i've seen from him in champions league, he's good at going forward and gives a good delivery into the box. Not sure how much he'd cost.
I think brining in Barry would just mess things up due to the fact that there is already so many options in midfield. Gerrard and Mascherano will probably play most of the games and depending on the formation, Alonso will as well. I just think it's a perfect combination that they have - Mascherano is the hard man of the team, the workhorse, is back to mop up any loose balls and really gets stuck into challenges...Alonso likes to hang back as well but is more creative than Mascherano and has a killer instinct for good passes...And of course Gerrard playing just behind Torres has been amazing to watch. They also have Lucas and Plessis in the squad.
If Barry were to join than Rafa would either need to shuffle the formation or play back up to the already established midfield. Of course, the other option is to sell Alonso, which IMO would be a mistake...But, hey what do i know? It'll be interesting to see what happens and i assume if Gerrard ralleys for Barry than we'll be seeing him in the team next season

I see you're guys points, I guess the difference is I think Arbelola and Finnan are solid players. Rafinha would be a great buy though in that he'd offer us a different option going forward.
Insua looks pretty good from what I've seen in the reserves, my main concern with him is that he may not be quick enough. Time will tell with him though. I've heard us linked with Lahm a couple of times, not sure if there's any substance in that but it would be a great signing.
Centre backs are fine though, not many teams have 3 CB's with the quality of Agger, Carra & Skrtel. Just need Agger fit coz he could become one of the world's best in a couple years.
Question- how did you guys think bringing in a player like Diego would affect the balance of the midfield?

If we're adding to midfield, someone has to leave.
Gerrard
Mascherano
Alonso
Lucas
Plessis
Wide players! Wwwwwwwide!
Anyone been following Leto? Where's he gone? Insua played well in the little bit of time he's had. What about Nemeth coming through - his record in the reserves is very good. Could be the 4th choice striker when Voronin (hopefully) leaves.

Nemeth is better right now than Voronin I think, he looks a really good prospect.
I honestly think it makes sense to sell Alonso right now, I don't think he's the same player we signed. Leto is going under investigation under the legitimacy of his Italian Passport, so he may not be able to return to us. Not much of a blow tbh, was never overly impressed by him. One of the lankiest wingers I've ever seen lol.
We've got some good guys in the youth/reserves at the moment, hope to see a couple coming through in the next couple of years. Pachecho especially, I think he could be something special.

Diego would probably play second fiddle to Gerrard if he were to come in.

RMadrid have also said that they have the funds to buy CRonaldo this summer. So that means more than £100M.
It's from Marca though, so it's probably total bullshit.

Solid squadplayer but for that price
they paid alot for Carrick aswell
Liverpool have 3 better CM's in Gerrard, MAcherano and Alonso and Lucas has looked great the few times I have seen them
