Arvydas Sabonis

Does anyone remember him? I used to hate him, but looking back, I kind of respect the big man and his passing ability. The Blazers vs Lakers rivalry for a couple years was a fun one. Did he just retire due to injuries/age, or what?

Yep. Sabas was probably one of the biggest "what ifs" in the NBA (right up there with Len Bias). Even though when he eventually made the NBA, he was still a heck of a center, he was well past his prime and lacked the athleticism that he had as a younger player.

Nevertheless, a heck of a big man passer. Probably one-two with Walton in that department.

not getting to see Sabonis is the only real reason I hate the USSR. They never really were a physical threat to me during my life time, but they did rob me of getting to see the 2nd most pure talented big man (Hakeem is #1) in his prime.

He was the man. Obviously, us NBA fans only got to see the downhill half of his career, but he was touted as a top 10 player in the world for nearly a decade by American and International scouts alike. His NBA career wasn't too shabby anyways - he was a HUGE body with a jump shot and some post moves. His mobility was gone, but he still had some skills and was one of the top centers in the league for several years.

Much like Dejan Bodiroga for yugoslavia. Both extremely great players with what-if auras about them.
