Tips/instruction on how to play effective forward/center in b-ball

Hey ya'll. I'm 6'2 190lbs, and though I'd rather slash through the lane and drain my jumper, apparently the rest of the team won't let me...since I'm taller than all of 'em.

I'm turning 21 btw, and no I don't play in some kind of league but I do play daily pick-ups with those that do play in leagues. And fuck me but they're all shorter than I am and they expect me to play inside. As far as my game goes as a forward, I can do it pretty well. I have some post moves, I don't do it often but rebounding is fun when i get the chance, blocking is fun as well, and I already have a jumpshot. So I got some moves as a big man but apparently I am not at all dominant like everyone expects me to be. Shiet I get schooled often in the post by guys who are 5'11".

Please, for those ballahs out there, if you have any tips for me on how to play more effective in the paint, that would be great. Thanks.

when rebounding hold onto your opponents shorts while keeping your hand on your side. It is discrete and will work. Another rebounding trick is to step on your opponent's foot if you are taller than them. It will prevent them from being able to jumps so you can get the rebound.

If you ever have to play post defense, you can allow the offensive player to keep backing into you, and then on one of his thrusts side-step him while also pulling on his jersey. This move is the only reason Malik Rose is still in the NBA.

Hmm, best advice I could give about post defense is that the key to playing good post defense is to push the offensive player out as far as possible from the basket. Dont use your arms to push him out however (thats a foul). Rather what you want to do is beat your opponent to the spot that he wants to post up in so that he catches the ball out further than he would want it... you want to use your legs/knees to push out your opponent in the post

Once the ball is in the post, I usually tell my players to do 2 things:

1) shade or force you opponent to his weaker side (ie/ make the player go left, usually the hand that most players are weakest with) to make the finish as hard as possible or force your opponent into an area where you know you will receive help defense from your teammates. If the player proves to finish well with his left, then shade him right and see how that goes.

2) play tall. meaning dont try to block every shot but rather just raising your arms vertically straight so to make the shot as hard as possible without fouling. you want to avoid trying to block every shot since if you go up against a really good post player, he'll play to your tendencies and catch you with pump fakes...

Other than that, boxing out your defender is pivotal. If youre a big man on your team, you want to be physical and rebound effectively - nothing more irritating than having a big man on your team who isnt physical and using his body effectively in the paint...

you need to play dirty if you are a big man. Especially if you aren't playing in a league that will call every call.
