Collossal individual performances in football (soccer!!)

The ones that almost single handedly win big games.

I remember a few weeks ago in the diving thread that I said that the flashy diving players are like fluff in that they only do all that fancy stuff against weak teams, and in the big important matches when one tiny advantage will win it, they are suddenly nowhere to be seen. In those games, the true giants of the game shine through and win matches almost single handedly.

From my own country of Ireland, the obvious one would be Keano. However, I'd be all day listing his out and everyone knows them already.

The undersung one is Paul McGrath for us. A legend in Ireland, and highly thought of in England where he played most of his football. In the 1994 World Cup, we drew Italy and nobody gave us a chance against this team as they were one of the favourites to win and they had also beaten us last time up. However, Paul McGrath had one of the most commanding performances anyone had ever seen and completely stopped the Italian attack from getting anything going. Ray Houghton was the man who scored the goal leading to our legendary 1-0 victory against them, but the hero was an injured Paul McGrath at the back who was just amazing the whole day.

Check out this video of one of the greatest days we ever had. I remember this clearly, was 12 years old, bedlam in one of the houses on my street at home.

Another one, and one of the most brilliant feats in all of sport, was Maradona in 1986. This was discussed recently, but no amount of praise on this performance was too much. If McGrath won a single match for Ireland, this guy almost single handedly won the entire 1986 world cup for Argentina. The England came was the prime example, every time he got the ball he looked like scoring, and on one occasion he scored the greatest goal ever.

Yeah, he cheated with the handball, even look at the build up to it though. Then the second one, wow.

So, post some examples of just a huge performance from one player when it really counted to win a big game.

I'm gonna take the time to write about some, literally, BRUTAL performances by a couple of players. A little football history lesson for y'all. One Uruguayan, another one from Ecuador and considered a GOAT in Uruguay.
Anyone that knows about soccer, knows that Uruguay teams are known for never giving up and becoming dangerous as fuck when they are losing. Well, here are a couple of monumental performances.

The first one was responsibility of this man...

Obdulio "The Black Boss" Varela.
Defensive Midfielder.

Legendary Captain of Uruguay's national team in the 50s. This badass motherfucker was the captain of the Uruguay that beat Brazil in the World Cup final of 1950.
In 1950, the world Cup was actually a mini league with Brazil needing just a tie to win the whole thing. The final game was about to be played in the Maracana stadium.
Everyone considered Brazil to be the victors. Rimet, the then FIFA president had a speech in Portuguese ready to be delivered for an eventual Brazilian victory. The medals already had the Brazilian names on it.

So "The BOSS" gives a legendary speech before the game about how his team must go against all odds to win.
The game starts, Brazil scores shortly after the beginning of the second half. Varela complains saying there's an offside but the goal is legal. He takes the ball, carries to the middle of the field and screams to his team "NOW IT'S TIME TO WIN!!!!".
Varela carries his team, running, tackling, and taking the whole midfield on his own to give a chance to Uruguay for a full, all or nothing attack.
It works, as legendary strikers Schiaffino and Ghiggia score and the game ended up 1-2 for Uruguay.

Brazilian Newspapers didn't want to accept it, fans committed suicide. Players and even Journalists in Brazil retired, while others were never called to the National Team again.
Brazil even changed the color of its jersey, and the slang "Maracanazo" was born.
Rimet had to take his speech in Portuguese and shove it all the way in his fucking ass.

Easily one of the Top 10 performances in Football history.

The second performance belongs this other first class badass.

"Gold's head", "Star of two flags"...
Alberto motherfucking Spencer.
Striker.

One of the most lethal strikers in history, and the one with the best header ever. This Ecuadorian is the leading scorer in the history of Copa Libertadores, the Champions League of the American continent. Best Ecuadorian player in history, best player in history of Peņarol, Uruguay's most important team.

Ever heard of the Boca-River derby? Of course.
Well, River has enemies, and their enemies use a nickname; "Gallinas". It may not translate literally, but it basically means chicken. What not everyone knows, is that the nickname has a history that goes way back...

Peņarol was one of the best teams in the 60s. They won Libertadores cups and defeated European champions to become World Champions. Right up there with the Santos of Pele. In fact, in 1963, the year Santos won the Libertadores against Boca and defeated Milan to become world champions, Peņarol defeated them 5-0 with a hat trick by Spencer.
In 1966 Peņarol faced River in the Libertadores final. After beating each other in two games, a third game was played in neutral land, Chile (that was the system back then).
River scored twice and was winning until the 57'th minute.
Spencer broke the ice, and Peņarol went on a rampage against the Argentinians. They turned it around 2-4 with Spencer scoring the 2-3 and putting Peņarol on top.

Peņarol and Spencer achieved eternal glory to become Champions of the American continent (They went ahead and defeated Real Madrid 2-0 twice, and became world champions after winning the Intercontinental cup. Spencer scored 3 of those 4 goals in total).

River stayed in infamy and as the chickens of Latin America. Not for that week, not for that month, not for that yr, not for that decade.
They have lived in infamy ever since, and will live in infamy forever.

This guy's performance was monumental, and legendary.

I guess my choice is a little strange in that we ended up losing the match, albeit on penalties. I love this guy, my favourite English footballer ever, as troubled as he was skilled, a rare player indeed. Paul Gascoignes Performance against West Germany at World Cup Italia 90. He played his heart out all game, constant flashes of genius. His booking in Extra time meant he would miss the final if we went through, it was clear for all to see how devestated he was by this (the famous crying incident), what a guy, he continued to play great despite this. It wasn't just this game, he was incredible through out the tournemant. This video brings back strong memories, this was the first England game I ever watched, I got used to heart break early!

Yeah good shout, he was a fantastic player, very tragic but for the very rare times he would get his head together he was wonderful.

I remember that game too, never realised how young he was at the time.

As far as English players go, its gotta be Alan Shearer though. Not the most exciting bloke ever, but he was a player you could depend on and always produced the goods. Few others like that I always thought highly of. Tony Adams was another one, and Keegan a bit further back.

Actually, Shearer did suffer from the occasional dry spell. The one leading up to Euro 96 being the most memorable til he broke it against the Swiss and went on to win the golden boot. I know what you're saying though, against Brazil in 2002 i was just wishing that he was still playing internationally and we didn't have to rely on Heskey to partner Owen up front. I truly believe the result could have been different had Shearer been playing. Heskey was a complete donkey and i used to cringe every time he got selected but i digress. (Can you be banned for footballer bashing?)

And i'm no fan of Roy Keane and hate Man U in general but his performance against Juve in the semis of champions league 99 has to be one of the best individual performances ever. He pretty much dragged the team through even though he knew he was going to miss the final.

And maybe not in one particular match but over the course of his career, i think Matt Le Tissier single handedly kept Southampton in the Premiership. There were a few seasons in a row where he scored at least half of Southampton's total goals and very rarely a tap in.

It's just a shame for him that his career clashed with Gazzas and the two of them couldn't play together in the England midfield.

Also refreshing in an era motivated by money that he stayed loyal to the club he loved throughout his career dispite big money offers.
