in TKD we called that a scorpion kick. . .they were great for feigns and quick points in touch-style sparring. Beyond that they were useless.

Come on , that's a good shot to use in a tournament.I used that same shot a couple of times just more rounded ( ura mawashi ) and it worked well.In tournament, sport combat.Need I say you would get killed using this on the street or mma.But while competing you try to surprise your opponent , knowing you will score and not get gnp'ed.
i mean it's karate...
