I lived in Herzliya which is 10 miles north of Tel-Aviv until I was 27. My parents still live there.
When I was a teenager, Tel-Aviv was the place we'd go out to. It is a crazy combination of middle east / Arab culture with European style dance clubs, restaurants of all kinds and of course, the beach.
As an Israeli I'm always sad to see how much potential Israel has as a tourist country and how it is ruined by the struggle Israel has with the Palestinians.
Having said that, Tel-Aviv is a very safe city. The night life in Tel-Aviv start at 12AM and run through the early hours of the morning. Last time I visited we were walking along one of the main avenues in Tel-Aviv at 11:45PM and we tried to find a place to sit and eat at. There was a waiting list at every restaurant. It's that crazy.
I always say this about Israel and Tel-Aviv. It can be raining rockets in the north and raining rockets in the south but the stock market goes up and Tel-Aviv bars and restaurants are full.
