You can find persians, turks, kurds, arabs and many more in Iran. Persians are the ones that have farsi as their native tounge. Turks (Azeri) are the second largest folk group in iran.

So referring to someone as persian is 100% correct. An Azeri that knows his history will get offended if he's called persian but would accept iranian if he's from Iran. The reason for this is that the Iranian government treats the azeri really bad.

no its not. Iranian refers to the country of origin, Persian refers to folkgroup.

not like it's really worth getting into. are all englanders WASPS? no, but they're still called english despite not being of that ethnic group because the name is ambiguous.

i'm talking in everyday speech. people from an iranian background often prefer persian to iranian because the term iran conjures up images of brown, militant, muslims.

you're using english as an example which is great actually. The definition is British since their from Great Britain. But someone english will call themselves english.

Now Great Britain has England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales but Iran is just Iran.

there are many reasons why persians like to refers to themselves as such. 1. iran = death, terrorism, evil, slow internet, spam mail and all shit bad while persian is more neutral.
2. They want to show that they are not turks, kurds or arabs but indeed persians.

In Iran the butt of many jokes are kurd, arabs and turks. "They" look upon these people as inferior people.
A couple of years after the famous "islam pictures" from denmark surfaced one of irans biggest newspaper published pictures of azeris. The cartoons were similar to the ones the Nazi's had of the jews. It compared azeris to cockroaches and had text about how stupid the people are and tips on how to kill them.


This also leads to lots of turks, kurds and arabs denying what they are and claim to be persians.
