wrong.
and for the others, the only reason The Simpsons declined is because of the amount of time they were on.
The problem is that they couldn't bring the plots and jokes like they used to because their characters became so timeless and so developed, you could basically guess everyone's next move. nothing became surprising, interesting or intriguing because you were so familiar with the characters and their quirks and perks. you knew the "ha ha" was coming from nelson, the "D'oh" from homer, the grunt from marge. all classic, but sadly, time takes it's toll on everything.
In a nutshell, after almost two decades on tv, how can they hold the same weight?
Times have changed, and family guy took over the new young audience by simply being "the new kid on the block"...and more vulgar, because they had to be.
The simpsons is the greatest sitcom of all time.
the most timeless characters, the most impact on the english language and culture, and "notable quotables" as far as the eye can see.
I'll close by saying that, yes, i admit, the only animated show that comes close right now is south park. [in its consistency alone...and i will admit that the south park movie was better than the simpsons movie.] south park has stood up for the simpsons against family guy several times. game recognizes game. But south park has not invaded our lexicon like the simpsons has. it basically did what family guy did, but they did it good.
As for futurama, it was sad to see it get tripped up, and it has had brilliant moments, [mostly owing to it borrowing ideas form old simpsons episodes, for example "the jive talking robot".] but the simpsons is clearly in a league of its own. animated or live action.
