Vulkan's New Ultra Light

*pics will be up tonight*
bear with me as im writing this review at work and secretly lol, i really dont know where to start with this review but i will say a couple of points first to break the ice i guess..starting off this gi is well worth the 99$ price tag..its durable, looks good, and has a good strong collar...BUT and this is a huge but, I would NEVER wear this thing in competition..i will digress in a few..

this is not me lol

On to the review:

I am 5'9" 170 lbs and i ordered a a2 thru nickh here on sherdog, and nick is the man and i recomend ordering all of your goods thru him. A+ for the sales and customer service..im fortunate enough to live in the same area as nick so i was able to get the gi like a day after it came in stock which was another plus.

the a2 fit pretty good out of the bag, the material is a thin honeycomb weave just like that of the pro model but much thinner and much more plyable and both the sleeves and the pant legs are BAGGY, no joke id compare it to a gameness single weave or a judo gi in terms of the cut of the gi.(measurements to come tonight). the pant cuffs as well as the sleeve cuffs are very thin and the pants are single material thruout( no renforced knees) w/ the normal vulkan/koral drawstring, the collar is the same width and thickness as the other vulkans/korals as well..

ive had the oppertunity to roll in this gi thru two days of hard training sessions and these are my findings: I WAS FUCKING MANHANDLED FOR TWO DAYS STRAIGHT!!!! GRRRRRR!!!!! but in all seriousness this vulkan ultra light is the gi version of a chinese finger trap, all of my partners were able to establish awesome controlling grips on every portion of the gi(deep collars, pistol grips, pant control like crazy) the gi was just plyable to their grips, and when i would try my escapes and grip breaks its almost like the gi would shrink and i would get no where..

on the plus side this will make an awesome training gi to be able to fight off opponents with elite grips and collar control, and will be perfect for hot days..another plus is that for how super white and new the gi is, it attracted minimal to no dinginess or dirt during my 2 days of rolling which is a huge plus for me when it comes to white gis and im pretty much sold on buying another white vulkan from nick, thistime ill be going for the promodel for sure tho..

so just for the recap on the quick review:

pros:
*awesome price
*awesome cust service(id recomend grapcon.com for all your gear purchases)
* looks good
* gi is dinge repellant lol
* very light weight
* good collar
* very comfortable and soft
* good training gi

cons:
* cut very loose and baggy
* plyable
* easy for opponent to control

so just to summerize: if you want a gi that is guarenteed to get you a loss but you want to look good in the process, go with the vulkan ultra light!!

any ?s feel free to ask away..

once again pics and measurements will be up tonight after i get home from the gym...

Ha, good review and I agree 100%. I think I'm going to be wearing a Howard for my next comp because I don't have to worry about weight. If I did I would wear the Vulkan but would have the sleeves tailored. Might just wear the Vulkan and see how it goes (probably not good)

Did you find the skirt to be hard to stay tied too? This was another concern I had. It comes out way to easy and this sucks if some one likes to wrap it.

In Sum AWESOME training gi, crappy comp gi. They have there new pro model coming out this week and I'm going to give that a go. They need to have longer skirts, thicker collars, more tailored sleeves.

Looks a nice GI. I like Vulkan a lot and have had a light GI from them before when training in the summer. I'd definitely buy this.

Your Marcelo gi is P.I.M.P. I really want one...If you don't compete I don't think you'll understand fully where Chris is coming from.

Rylan rolled at worlds wore a Keiko in the absolute and did ok (but lost). In his weight he wore a Vulkan and got destroyed by Tio Chico. He was not a happy camper.

OntheMat :: Gis & Kimonos

im pretty upset to say the least that they came out w/ a v2 of the marcelo even after they said it would be a limited edition..oh well i guess money talks..

I didn't realize this until this year, I will never wear a light Gi to any competition again. I'd rather lose the extra two pounds the night before a comp.

Two options, 1. lose more weight.

2. Train so you can be like Braulio Estima and Andre Galvao, then no matter what you wear you should be fine
