Shevlin Sparring Glove Review, Seriously Impressed

I bought modified 16oz sparring gloves, from Mona at Shevlin. They seem to be sort of a mom and pop shop, who take serious pride in their work and make the highest quality traditional boxing gear they possibly can. Here is my review.

Most comfortable and protective sparring gloves I have worn, ever. I have worn Fairtex, Grant, and Everlast. These are my favorite.

The leather on these sparring gloves is soft and thick. Reminiscent of an expensive leather desk chair. They tell me it is lined on the underside with rubber sheet padding. But I'm not about to cut them up to examine.

The foam is hand stuffed, soft, and conforms to my hand beautifully. The first time I punched my sparring partner Joe in the face with these, he looked at me and said "Damn, that is nice!"

The interior is cotten, feels almost like soft denim. Amazing feel. When I slide into these, it reminds me of the first time I made love without a condom. Seriously a suprising pleasure to wear.

I had requested no cross bar, so I could clinch while doing my thai boxing sparring. Feels great. The thumb is detached, at my request.

There is a velcro wrist wrap that is narrower than thaiboxing brands like fairtex, but that I like. The wristwrap is two layers of leather with one layer of rubber foam between, padded at my request.

A total value at 90 bucks.
certainly a 9.7/10 in my book. Favorite sparring gloves. I prefer these to my Fairtex 16s.

I was just wondering if the detached thumb makes a difference in clinching. Also, what modifications to the glove would you suggest if I want to use it for both boxing and Muay Thai? The same as your gloves? Did you go Hook n Loop or Lace up with the velcro?

Interested in photos, sounds really nice.

I believe you have the laced up with the padded wrap around. What would be the purpose of the wrap around (in addition to the lace)? Just general extra security/padding for the wrist?

Have any idea how these would compare to the TU Heatseekers or Winnings in terms of hand protection?

I got the velcro closure, no laces.
I definately love the mods I got. not having the cross bar makes it super easy to clinch, open and close the glove.
If you are doing regular boxing also, I would recommend requesting an attached thumb, to help prevent eye gouging a little better. a detached thumb like I have is simply easier to clinch with in thaiboxing.

I can't wait to get my camera back to put some photos up.

I have put on winnings, and these have a similar feel with the foam, but the shevlins are alot easier to open and close.

fightscience, I'm looking for a pair to do Muay Thai with, so I'm interested in the photos. The only detached thumb glove I could find was this:

And they look pretty horrible, lol. Looks like it has no structural integrity or any thing, and I don't think I want one that looks like that, LOL.

Also, what would you think about the ribbed cuffs vs. regular (both in addition with the wrist wrap) for MT training?

Here's a photo of the ribbed cuff from Shevlin:

Custom hand crafted gloves for only $90? Nice. I remember someone asking about this brand awhile back but back then they didn't have prices listed on their site.
