Who here crosstrains with weapons and does mma?

I just take mma classes but have always been interested in weapons and just ordered some dogbrothers dvds. I wondered who here trains in mma/weapons and has training a weapon helped your mma.

I spent a while training both. Weapons training teaches footwork above all else, and any footwork mistakes get amplified with the weapon. This carries over quite well to MMA.

I just train with the broad sword so far since it's part of my style and there's no better wrist workout. Not to mention it helps with force projection and waist training.

Not to mention it's become quite fun.

I train with knife and single stick and study/teach self defence.I found that the weapons stuff is good for improving footwork and your speed both in attack and defence. The stick stuff is good to break down and study the body mechanics and how you can utilise the force you can generate in stick play into boxing stuff.

I train MMA, and stick fighting, my friend I train with is all about dog brothers.

I personally am into the knife like a madman.

Its basically a vertical wooden pole that was used in medieval sword practice and you hacked away at it to use angles, impact training, force and the sense of actually contacting against something as you would in real life.

I use a variety of pells, the first being a wooden fence post placed into a holder which is bolted onto 3 x 10kg weights at the base for stability and that gets hacked away at etc etc.

The second is another post with hooks bolted into it top and bottom, which is attached to bungee cord and connected to hooks in ceiling/rafters and the 3 x 10kg weights I mentionned earlier and this moves around when struck(like a double ended ball) this pole is smaller than the first one.

The third is old off cuts of carpet rolled up tight and bound at top and bottom.

The fourth is the strong cardboard tubes that you get carpet wrapped around and suspended from the ceiling and this too gets hacked, slashed and stabbed.

All good fun...Strictly speaking they are not all pells but its all stuff I use and thought you might be interested in if you dont already use these things.

Thats part of the origin of the phrase to do something "pell mell" if you have that saying over there?

Please note pell work is done with LIVE blades so be careful and go easy to start.Especially if you are not used to hitting things for real....use eye googles too to protect against flying wood chips too. Also the bigger/heavier the blade, the quicker you go thru pells....
I have a couple of smaller blades I use and a Camiilus survival knife(cu7?) Be prepared to sharpen them after and if u use a folder the pivot on it will give way as well and the blade will wobble around as the ratchet gets fucked.

If anyone is interested I also have stuff to play with on blunt blades as training stuff/aids but you will find it elsewhere too so I won't claim it as my own!!!!Let me know if you arre interested...

i have trained both and find it helps to some degree.
pros-
footwork
range awareness
getting hit with a weapon makes being hit by an unarmed opponent is softer

cons-
switches in range still can confuse you even after a ton of training
non weapon hand maybe chambered low or behind you because you don't want it hit
