some styles practice a lot of forms and flow drills. this works to a point, but if you don't spar you don't know what works and what is for the gym only. a lot of weapons schools do not spar. that is the problem. see tma. there are also a lot of stick schools designed around blades, especially swords. with a piece of steel, a lot of techniques are out and the checking and parrying as well. steel on steel binds, stick on stick doesn't, so no need for the checking(which is really unbinding of the swords). on the note of sparring, there are a lot of wekaf guys running around. wekaf is not reality. db is not reality either. but the differnce between wekaf and db is huge. wekaf guys run around with full body armor of the head, torso, hands and legs. db guys decide what they wear, but usually it is a fencing helmet, gloves, an elbow pad. that's a huge difference. one's learning curve and reality curve is different. you forge the fluffy moves and use what works.
