New Balance and good judgement. Take some Krav Maga as a backup...

Roll of quarters. Not legally a weapon but try throwing a punch with one in your power hand, you really could fuck somebody's life up.

Common sense, works almost every time.
Avoiding areas where trouble is likely to occur works best. If you desire to avoid drunken fights don't go to bars. If you want to avoid being robbed by junkies avoid the bad part of town. If you want to avoid someone jumping out of the shadows and attacking you stay in well lit areas.
Pay attention to your surroundings and the people around you. Is someone following you? Why is that guy loitering around the alley? Do the people you're approaching look nervous? Do you have an "out" that is accessible?
IMO if a person feels the need to go armed in order to feel secure then they are going to the wrong places. That being said I am "armed" probably 80% of the time with something that could be considered a weapon (other than myself).

This is Jermaine Andre'. I train personal bodyguards and police officers and one of our main concerns is disarming attackers armed with a firearm. There were recent tests done on how long it takes to draw and accurately fire a firearm into a target and the average was two seconds. It was also determined that an individual with a knife at ten feet would make it to the person drawing the firearm and cut him before he could fire and this was drawing from the hip. Hence, a person who knows how to strike properly could take down a person with a weapon before he could draw and accurately fire. Furthermore, it does take time to draw a weapon and I train agents to go for the weapon while the person is attempting to draw it. Now I would never put hand to hand combat up against a drawn and properly aimed weapon unless you had no choice but to take a bullet and hope for your "dead man's ten seconds", but a properly trained and quick thinking unarmed individual does have a chance at taking down an armed individual. Especially if that armed individual puts all of his faith into thinking that he is automatically going to win just becasue he has a firearm. Remember also that a weapon has no loyalties to it's former owner.

Hey Jermaine Andre you doing your country proud by training up potentially live saving people congrats. I do a uniformed pub;ic services course so we here about all the horrible things that happen on the streets in England. I dont take out any weopons because i belive i dont need to i mean if someone will beat me up then they will if i have a weapon and attack i could get inured much worse. Plus insurance is a grea invention.

If some pulls a gun out there is one move that i suggest it comes from the golden age in japan its called "Twmucki" Translated it means RUN!

Try this next time you go the shooting range: Set the target about 7 yards, use one hand, don't use the sights, and shoot your entire magazine off (as fast as you can, if your range is cool about that).

When you realize you haven't hit anything, you should also realize the value in running away from someone with a handgun. Try this at further distances for more fun. Don't mind the strange looks you get from everyone else.

(PS. Running is for avg. Joe's like myself. No disrespect to professionals who put their lives on the line for me!)
