stupid story

I remember I was training Aikido at the college,
and this dude was just sitting there watching.

I invited him to join our class and he said no, I attempted to make
some conversation and then he tells me that he thinks ALL martial arts
is a joke. Will not work and is useless.

I get really angry.

I ask him how he defends himself, and he points to his school bag and tells me
he always has a knife with him.

At this point I begin to insult him.
I tell him how awesome it is that a piece of crap like him is not into martial arts
because it's too good for him, etc. etc. basically challenging him to draw for his knife.
The idiot let me know what his tactics are, (knife) and where it is (his back pack).
He would not have had the time to pull it out, and even if he did, I felt like I could
just kick his butt with it. He had no chance. He didn't try, even though I repeatedly
insulted him, I almost just spitted in his face. I almost just assaulted him
even though he wasn't going to make the 1st move. I was dumb enough to be willing.
But the main reason why I didn't do anything, it was too easy. He was my size, but
I had complete mental domination. this was back in my more blood thirsty days.
If he is smart, I think I encouraged him to carry a knife in a more accessible place,
because I know he thought of reaching for it, but stopped because he knew he wouldn't
make it, so I only encouraged more violence out of this encounter. We have a moron
running around with a knife who hates martial arts, and I only gave him more reason
to his narrow mind.

moral of the story, don't be like this moron.
And try to do better than what I did.

It sounds like you were the bigger moron in that situation. You were about to fight a guy because he had a difference of opinion with you over the validity of martial arts, while you were training Aikido no less (talk about missing the point of an art).

ok fine I'm the bigger moron!

1. I invite the guy nicely
2. he is rude, disrespectful and insulting not just a difference of opinions

3. I keep my calm and ask him what he does to defend himself.
4. he responds arrogantly almost threatening me about his knife

5. now I know his game, I stoop down to his level and insult him back, through him
off guard.

I guess it depends on how he said it,

I remember I taught class at the college one time and it was about the UFC.
When I stated how Royce took the fight to the ground some jerk yelled out,
BOO, fight like a man. This guy was a jerk throughout the whole semester.

This reminds me of the Peyton Quinn story where he is teaching a seminar and the guy says what would you do if I pulled a gun and points his fingers as though holding a gun and the instructor goes "what , you gonna shoot me with your finger?"

The trainee goes "no,with a gun"
"Well ,where is it?"
"Well I didnt bring it....."

Or something like that it goes,I'm sure someone will pick me up on the details but one of my guys has the book at the moment, sorry, but you get the gist and the point, hopefully.

I know an Aikido instructor who was presenting himself as being a great self defence instructor and claiming Aikido was a fantastic art (!) for self defence but refused to come and play with anyone outside his art.He would come and look at where we trained but refused to go along to a session or even an informal session. Most reality/self defence guys imo are happy to look at other stuff and I encourage it in my students,if they want to look at other stuff, fine. They go ,they look and come back and go "nahhhh...."

As a matter of curiousity (SP) Monk, how do you rate Aikido as a self defence art now after looking at other stuff?
