Mostly true, though a skilled kendo practitioner can still wear your ass out with a shinai. I believe quite a few people in Japan (i.e. truckers and such) carry them in their cars and resort to them the way an American would a tire iron or a baseball bat in a bad situation.

The father of the girl I was dating when I livedin Japan had one; dunno if he practiced, all I know is that he used it to beat her brothers' ass when he screwed up.

Yep...nothing like getting cracked on the knuckles or the forearm with a slab of Japanese white oak to ruin your whole day. Ouch!

For knife sparring, using a marker with water-soluble ink in lieu of knives is good for training; no doubting whether or not you would've gotten cut. Some MA supply stores sell training knives with ink or chalk tips for this purpose.
