Recommend me a Revolver.
Hey Guys,
I currently own an 80's Winchester 12 gauge. I am in the market for a pistol and have always been a fan of revolvers. I need something good for home protection but I would also like for the ammo to be fairly inexspensive for going to the range. Thoughts? Recommendations? Thank you.

get a ruger or s&w in 38/357.
You can have the fun super powerful 357 rounds when you want to put holes in your nehiboors engine block, and 38's when you want to go plinking and relax at the range.

So they make revolvers that shoot both .38 and .357. Damn, that sounds perfect. Anyone have a prefrence between Ruger and S&W? What kind of a price am I looking at?

You can shoot .38 in a .357, but not the other way around. Ruger or S&W, they're both good.
Something like a Ruger GP100 or S&W Model 686 would probably be a good choice. I'm assuming you want something for home defense and range shooting, not for concealed carry. If you want something a little cheaper, Taurus has some nice revolvers.

All 357 magnums shoot 38 specials, not vice versa. Price-wise, shop around...you want new or are you open to used? I walked in a pawn shop a year or so ago and the guy pulled a snub S&W model 66 (stainless .357) from behind the counter and I walked out @ $250 - with a huge smile. That one in particular will be with me forever (as most that I buy). Ruger makes a great revolver, but I doubt I'll ever buy one...
Check some sites for prices, GunBroker.com Online Gun Auction and buds gun shop should get you going in the right direction.

Correct, I do not need it for concealed carry. I have the money for new but I am open to used. I do not like the idea of going to a pawn shop really. I will call around to some different gun stores and see what they got in terms of a .357. Can I order a gun off the internet if I live in CA? How does that work?

That is a fantastic deal. If it is an older model, you got a flat out steal.

It's a '-2' with the original box/manuals etc, tent was definately pitched.
Shizzy...not too sure about CA laws. It's usually shipped to a licensed dealer, who runs a background check before letting you walk with it. You should do a little research on your state laws if no-one 'local' pitches in.
