As practical as weapon sparring can get...

Let me put it this way to you guys, Sport Kenjutsu Kobudo is the most practical application of weapon sparring you can get today. Check out the vid. Anybody in the video that's wearing a hakima and keikogi (blue/purple top with either black gi pants or big black 'samurai' pants) is a member of my team. Not because we are that great at weapons sparring, but because we have and continue to train very hard at it. As the sport gets larger (as it has been so far) more people show up to competitions and hopefully, over time, other schools will start training like we do. Hopefully, some of you will have some input and those of you with a moderate skill level would be interested in competing in a sport like this. Let me know what you think!

Personally I love this sport because you can pit any weapon and any style against one another and see how they really stack up.

why do you want other schools to train like you do?

you want to expand your business? So does that mean your the instructor?

I dont understand this desire to monopolize...
unless all you care about is domination, power and money.

is this point or continuous sparring? i wouldn't know which is more realistic for weapons, 1 cut 1 kill but u might as well train continuous some time for it's benefits. and 1 cut/1kill doesn't always happen, especially w/ armor.

it's not really 100% realistic because foamed, wooden, steel, weapons feel diff. not that i encourage sparring w/ real weapons

i'm very confused by this response... i am not an instructor at all. I want other schools to train as hard as we do so there will be more competition. Not just a bunch of guys sitting around debating what styles or what weapons were better than one another. I hate going to tournaments and the only people I end up actually competing with are the guys that I train with every day. I have no desire to monopolize whatsoever. If i wanted to just win every tournament, I'd keep it a secret so that nobody will actually practice and train and I can walk through them in competition.

We do have divisions in the tournaments for continuous sparring and we do practice continuous sparring as much as possible. It's great for stamina. You'd be suprised how taxing swinging a foam weapon can be.

My older bro used to do something similar, only using homemade weapons with the striking surfaces formed out of cloth-wrapped foam. It was called "Dagorhir" if I recall, and was done out in the woods dressed like D&D - type guys. Nerdy, and damned fun.

This sort of sparring looks interesting, though if I may say it looks like a lot of the weapons seemed...well, a tad "floppy," something which I think would limit the range of techniques and/or prod someone towards developing strategies which when applied with the real deal might do more harm than good.

But it's stilla good idea. I've dabbled in knife, sword, club, and short staff fighting. Mastering just a small range of simple but effective techniques and strategies could be, in my opinion, damned useful in an "oh-shit!" situation where you're outnumbered, or facing off with a guy with some sort of weapon in his hand, and you're able to get your hand on a sturdy piece of wood, or blunt object, or some such.

Ah I see, you don't want a monopoly just go competition, my bad,
BUT the grey area is that you want better competition in YOUR tournaments.

maybe you should keep trying other weapons tournaments.
and if you think they are so inferior then we are back to the monopoly idea again. do you see what I mean?

well, by my tournaments i meant our divisions in the world karate union hall of fame tournament, the arnold classic / the arnold martial arts festival, the battle of columbus, the u.s. belt championships, the slippery rock classic, etc... so not really, OUR tournaments, just ones that we have divisions in.
