Carrying a SD baton in the car door can be asking for trouble. Anytime someone can make a case for you having a 'combat mindset' you are in for potential legal trouble.
Carrying a knife for self defense is illegal and can get you arrested and/or in a great deal more trouble if deployed. However, carrying a knife as a tool (i.e. for use cutting boxes, rope, packages, etc.) that you use in the emergency of being threatened is a different legal scenario.
The same scenario goes for the bat actually. If a cop pulls you over and asks why there is a bat under your seat and you reply "in case some nut assaults me" you can be in for a lot of trouble. If you reply "Sometimes I like to stop at the batting cages or pick up a game of softball" you're generally in the clear.
Generally, using something handy for a weapon when pushed is much more acceptable than carrying something for use as a weapon "just in case".
Just some random thoughts to contribute.

I would NEVER pull a weapon unless it was necisary. But the secone the other person does - or it's not one on one, i'm not going to hesitate to slashing or start guaging eyes ... you don't get second chances. If you keep a baseball and glove with the bat in your car, it won't get second guessed
law sucks for the victim. id still rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
