opinions of the Beretta .40 has a hobbiest gun

I want to start by saying I know absolutely dick about guns, I went hunting as a kid but never had to much interest in guns. This past weekend my buddy who just got out of the army took me shooting with his Beretta, Jesus. Fucking. Christ. I have a new found interest in buying a hand gun. I just wanted to get some opinions on the gun I shot. I am contemplating buying a gun now so if someone could point me towards some good research sources I would be grateful. I definitely want to go with a larger caliber and I dont intend on carrying it around, just something to go shooting with but has a good pop. Money isnt too much of a concern I would like to keep it reasonable for a first gun though. I live in California too, if that matters.

I was never a fan of the Berettas really I would recommend a Glock, H&K or Kimber.

Very insightful. What don't you like? The way it fits in your hand? The action? The color?

With you there. These 3 have a better reputation than Baretta. I won a Glock 19 and a HK USP 9mm. I prefer the HK, but the Glock was much less expensive and shoots extremly well. I'd recommend a Glock for your first gun.

Didn't like the feel personally I prefer the feel of the Glock or compact H&K 40. P2000 or USP though the slack in the trigger pull on the H&K took a little getting used to.

Any of the major manufacturer's offer quality handguns (Glock, Springfield XD, S&W M&P, etc.). For caliber, I would recommend a 9mm, mainly because it's the cheapest out of the 3 major calibers (9mm, 40 S&W, .45 ACP). The best thing is to go to a gun store that has a range, so you can rent the various guns and try them out. The best "one" is the gun that fits your hands well and that you can shoot well. For example, my main handgun is a Glock 21 (.45 ACP) and I shoot it well. My friend has a Springfield XD .45, which is a great gun, but I'm not as accurate with it as I am my Glock.

I would start with a Glock 19.

thanks for the responses. I think someone referred to berettas having a bad reputation, care to elaborate.

Are there any sources I can look at for reviews and to research guns and ammo in general?

You'd be better off asking around on a proper gun forum like thehighroad.com

Everyone will have their own opinions though. Some will say that Berettas are the best weapons they have ever fired, and others will contend that if faced with an intruder, they would sooner take their chances throwing the gun at him rather than opening fire. I've had bad experiences with several models of Berettas jamming. I would go Glock if given the choice.

That and I really don't like the feel of the .40 caliber round. Either go 9 or go BIG imo.
