Any of the major manufacturer's offer quality handguns (Glock, Springfield XD, S&W M&P, etc.). For caliber, I would recommend a 9mm, mainly because it's the cheapest out of the 3 major calibers (9mm, 40 S&W, .45 ACP). The best thing is to go to a gun store that has a range, so you can rent the various guns and try them out. The best "one" is the gun that fits your hands well and that you can shoot well. For example, my main handgun is a Glock 21 (.45 ACP) and I shoot it well. My friend has a Springfield XD .45, which is a great gun, but I'm not as accurate with it as I am my Glock.
