New York City Handgun Permit/License

Has anyone navigated the confusing ridiculous handgun Laws here in New York City and gotten a residence permit? How long did it take? Is a lawyer needed?

Good luck getting a hand gun in NYC. The laws are pretty ridiculous. If you don't own your own business and make night deposits it's hard to get a gun. There's the application process of course and you have to know what kind of gun you want and apply for that type, back ground checks etc... which are at least 90 days backed up then if your record is clean you have like 30 days to go out a buy the gun and only that one gun you applied for. If you change your mind, you back through the application process again. Good luck my friend.

I may be wrong but the only way to get a permit is to have had the permit before the "ban" in the 80s.

Stand by though the recent ruling of the Heller case in Washington DC is gonna hit New York and Chicago ...HARD

Dont waste your time. Its amost impossible, very expensive, and only good for 1 yr at a time in which the whole process starts again. Unless your politcally connected, then your life is worth more then us regular folks.

Is it really that hard? Doesn't that violate the Constitution somehow?

Yes, and yes. But the guys with enough money and juice to challenge the laws apparently aren't interested in doing so.
