Or
"Shuto", though both could be correct since many Japanese words are Anglicized with two or more spellings. If memory serves, they were designed primarily as a tool for climbing, which used together with a similar contrivance worn on the foot, were used by ninjas to get better purchase on the face of a sheer surface for climbing. While not necessarily weapons, I think they could be pressed into use in a pinch to add damage to hand strikes and maybe offer a modicum of use as a defensive measure against edged weapons. Though I'm not sure...few subjects are as obscured, skewed by, or clouded in both truth and fiction by bullshit than the weapons, skills and talents of feudal Japans' ninja clans./
I've also heard of a weapon called
Bangh Nakh, meaning "Tiger's Claws" or "Cat's claws." I think they were configured with the claws set in an overhand position and used primarily as a weapon, unlike the
shuto. Too bad I can't sure of the spelling or find a decent pic.
