Musashi

i know he is considered one of the best sword fighters ever...but does anybody think his fighting methods were a little cheap. i read a book about his strategies...seems like he was pretty much a cheater...he used to attack people before they were ready...just seemed kinda cheap because my perception of the samauri was that they were very honorable and always had respect for their opponent....this just kinda made me wonder...

what do yall think?

I don't think it is cheap... he was a true study of the art of war.

Honor is a subjective trait.

The Samurai in my view were nothing but that centuries mafia thugs pure and simple. Everyone assume (and we know what that means) they were these honorable warriors, horsecrap in my book. I'm sure their were honorable Samurais just like there were honorable people, few and far between.

I agree "Honor is a subjective trait".

I've read a few things on Musashi, and because this is all second third and fourth hand knowledge take it as such. At the time he was not considered honorable, but allthose that challenged him found out that even if he was cheap, he was damn good too. He didn't believe in the ritualistic ways of fighting, he believed that winning above all else was the most important. The book of five rings translation that I read, and I will try and find the translator and post who it was, said right in it that he believed that he wasn't a martial artist but a martialist, he didn't care about honor for the honor was in not dying. Many of his fights were with the bokken (not sure if I remembered that word right) and when his opponent bowed he would drive the bokken into their skull and kill them. Also his two sword technique that is so often portrayed in movies and the like was supposedly designed for fighting multiple opponents and I haven't read anywhere that it was actually used in a duel.

I have read his book.

He fought to win and didn't care how he did it.

End of story.

In a sword fight the only objective was/is to win and how you do it should not matter. Honor as we in the west describe it (romanticized version) is not how the samurai saw it. We in the west have this idea of honor from Arthur and the knights of the round table and we try to think of the samurai in the same way but it is not so. Samurai were crafty and self preservation was important to them as it rightly should be.

Respect for the opponent is ok but respect for their own life was more important. A lot of samurai traits have been popularized in movies which are just not true.

Did this answer your question?
