Start out with a 9 mm. That's a good gun to start with, not too big and not too small should you decide to stay with that ordinance. A .44 is a monster weapon. Only .500 S&W, 454 Casul and DE .50 are bigger. I am sure there are a few more. I am happy to say, I have shot all of those large caliber weapons and they are not enjoyable to shoot and go far beyond what you need a handgun for. Unless you are huning rhino.
