High Point Handguns
Has anyone used or own the High Point in .40 or .45? A couple guys in my office were talking about them and asked me about them. I have fired their carbine and its a lot of fun but I've never touched their pistols.
Some people say they are a good value, others say they are total garbage. What say you?

I think they are shit. They are big, clunky, and from what I have heard often have trouble feeding properly. I've handled hundreds at the pawn shop where I worked while finishing my undergraduate degree. They are larger versions of Bryco's and Jennings. I have never heard anyone who didn't live in a mobile home or who had any real experience with guns claim that they were anything but shit.
I expect my guns to work when I need them, so I've never been interested in giving my money to the lowest bidder.

LOL! None of my friends live in trailers and a few of them said they were fun. I certainly wouldn't care one and bet my life on it. Your response is about what I was thinking - I greatly appreciate it.

I have a friend in law enforcement and he says they pick up a lot of High Points from gang members and drug dealers. If you've got an extra $100 bucks, go ahead and pick one up. But certainly don't count on it to be your primary self defense weapon.
Smith and Wesson Sigma's are relatively inexpensive and they're a big step up from High Points.

The manual for the sigmas warns not to use +p loads in them. I am less than impressed with them.
Ruger makes a very reliable semi-auto for a reasonable price. I don't think they're especially good looking, but they work.

Yeah, that's a good point, but from what I hear they're pretty reliable. At least that's a step a up from the High Point.

Hi-Point guns are aesthetically ugly and laden with some pretty serious image problems.
Their handguns have become associated with gang-bangers for the simple fact that they are simple to operate and cheaper than dirt (retail price starts around $185, brand-new) and widely available, making them the perfect gun to empty in the general direction of an opposing gang and then chuck over a fence when the po-pos arrive and give chase. Every guy I've known who owned a Hi-Point was a gangsta wanna-be or someone who decided they *HAD* to have gun to have a gun.
Their even uglier pistol-caliber carbines became infamous when one was pried from the cod, dead hands of one of the Columbine kiddies after their rampage. That incident had the curious effect of creating a sort of odd interest which hurt their image in the market place while boosting their sales.
That said: they are simple, blowback-operated, and even though I doubt I'd ever buy one (sorry-- I'm a bit of a snob about what guns I own) and sure as hell wouldn't want to be found carrying one by a cop (they seem to scream "trouble!" the way butterfly knives do) every article I've read in every reputable gun mag has given them good marks (albeit grudgingly) for their reliability and accuracy.

The high point .45 calibre hand guns are heavy, uncomfortably so in my opinion and never struck me as too terribly accurate either. I got one at a gun show spur of the moment for $150, realized it was a piece of junk soon after. Ended up selling it for $230 to some kid who hurassed me about it for months. He made it worth my time, and he walked away with a piece of shit for relentlessly questioning me about it.
Fair and square deal.
