Chinese Staff in action:

I forgot who requested seeing the Chinese Staff movements in practical-use demonstration but here you go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euvaZ...g%20Fu%20staff

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-d3Z...g%20Fu%20staff

(I wish people would learn how to steady a damn camera.)

This isn't a weapon vs. weapon clip but a good clip of the 8 Immortals form:

http://www.sherdog.net/forums/newthr...newthread&f=65

Now of course these are demonstrations, but how are you going to find footage of battle-field hand-weapon use nowadays? lol

Freakin' sweet.

The first reminds me of the staff scene in Coming to America for some reason.

The one with the three-section staff is the coolest by far.

I used to have a 3-section. And let me tell you from experience:

Learning to spin and swing it = OUCH.

But largely one of my favorite Chinese Weapons eva.

I saw a guy using a 3 section staff in freestyle weapon point sparring once.

They don't seem to have those nowadays unfortunetly since i always found those interesting to watch.

There's a couple aspects that suck about using them in traditional senses versus for forms.

I noticed this when watching the Beijing Wu Shu team.

The ones they use have shorter chains joining the links. Mine was either retarded, or not designed for easy use. It screwed together to make a whole staff and was made of ****l. But the chains for each section were longer than the ones I see, and the thing on a whole was bigger. This meant I had to use wider and more fluid motions, all without kicking my own ass.

It sucked very much bad until I got decent with it.

Though I found out through sparring with my own students that Tonfa do particularly well against it.

No one said it was an easy weapon to use.

I'm not to familiar with 3 stection staffs, or tonfas but I'm sure there are some tricks you can use against the tonfa.

I'm sure there are as well, but it's tough. 3-sections have a slight disadvantage because they're mainly a trapping weapon from my experience. So they're good for in-close.

Tonfa defended well because they're a very good defensive weapon in-close. And with the style of their strikes, they can break-in with full-force. Plus they have the speed-advantage.

I definitely would like to learn how to use a three section staff and other weapons unfamiliar to Medieval weapons MAs. I've trained with and against short, long, and two handed swords, staffs (staves?), and even boffer axes but never anything like a tonfa, three section staff, nunchaku or anything like that. I'd be at a bit of a loss on how to attack someone using trapping and closer range weapons with a sword without leaving myself open to attacks.

You'd have to fence them. Distance. If they get a chance to disarm you or shatter your blade they will. Without hesitation.

a sword/staff can be a good trapping weapon too. though probably not in the same way.

you can feel where the other person is moving and push it out of the way/offbalance them. and i know a sword technique which you just roll around to cut the inside of someone's wrist artery.

I've never seen a boffer axe before but a weird one i train with sometimes is the hammer. not really trained for as a weapon, just something i came up with to add weight and projection to my strikes. since they are just an extention of hand to hand moves
