G3 Clone

Anyone shot one of these? Its a PTR 91, basically a HK 91 clone. Apparently they bought all the machines from an HK factory in Portugal and moved em to conneticut. This fucker is bad ass. I saw a guy at the range the other week and it was so accurate it was ridiculous. On top of that, Its reliable as hell. Im looking for a hard hitting semi auto in 308 that is accurate and reliable that will also shoot any and all ammo without hiccups. The A10 is a thought but its picky about its ammo, according to those that have em. The 308 spittin out 168 grains at semi auto is definetely a ball buster for the bg. I personally think the 180 gr would be fine brown bear medicine, heck, Id even try one with the 168s. I saw a guy take one with 180 so know its doable. Anyhow, anyone got any experience with these G3 clones? Ive thought about trading in the AK for it but dont think ill ever want to part with my beloved AK.

I don't think that hunting Grizzlies with a .308 is a great idea. Sure it could be done, but I think you'd be better served with a bolt action .338 Win mag.

Oh I hear ya. I wouldnt wanna be ambushed in timber by a grizzley with about any rifle. If I had a 100yard shot at em that would be different, especially if I saw him before he saw me. If they were closing in fast I think Id want a semi auto. Chances are Ill never go brown bear hunting with a G3 clone but id like a rifle that will kill anything if it had to. I guess its about penetration and placement. I know that 308 will penetrate a brown bear and if its a spine or cns shot hes doomed no matter what calliber. I just saw a video of a dude in alaska take a 150yrd or so shot with a 308 bolt action and 180 gr and droped that brown bear immediately. Most we have up near my ranch are black bears, cougars, and black tails, nothing a 308 wouldnt handel.

Ive got couzins in alaska and they said they know people that use 270s to ward off brownies. I know the outfitters wont let you go out with anything less than a 30-06 anyhow so whatever.

As for the G3, I hear its got more recoil than the AR10 but that its much more reliable. The Germans and many euros used it for many decades so its gotta be manageable (when firing rapid semi auto) for a decent sized healthy feller like my self. Anyway you look at it, that 308 cartridge packs a punch and with semi auto 20 round mags, its lights out for most critters.

I guess the grizzley thing is just me rationalizing its utility. I mean, the 308 seems like a more usefull load compared to other assault rifles like the 7.62x39 or 556 in terms of its terminal ballistics. If you guys were in a SHTF scenario wouldnt you want the bunker busting 308? Or would you think recoil would slow you down? The weight on the G3 is 9 pounds so its about the same as an ak 47. I know for a fact the G3 is a heck of alot more accurate. Granted, the ak can kill easily up to 150 yards, but that G3 can hit a dime at 100, it was amazing. I think that G3 is more accurate than even the AR15. The AR15 lacks kill range like the G3 and certainly lacks barrier penetration.

I've owned and/or shot many variants on the G3 platform including contract rifles. Overall they are very reliable in every condition/climate I asked it to work in. The only malfunctions I ever had were due to the ammo not the weapon. They down have a heavier felt recoil than an AR10 or M1A type rifle. It is due to the operating system (delayed locking bolt). It is not bad at all (i.e. shoot 100's of rounds/day and not be sore) but not a pussy cat like a AR15. It is HEAVY to lug around in the field. I recall one version I had was 15lbs with optics. Great for prone work but a boat anchor so not too pleasant for field stalk hunt (varminting it's fine). It was designed to be used with standard weight NATO ammo (i.e. 150gr class). The 165 and 168 grainers worked well. Accuracy-wise with Federal Gold Medal 168gr., even the straight base versions were at ~1 MOA or less. Surplus or white box would be worse but never over 2MOA depending on the ammo. You do not have the flexibility for heavier weight hunting rounds with any semi-auot that you get with a bolt gun. I felt like I was pushing it with 180's. If you want to change anything on the rifle; accessories and after-market parts aren't nearly as common as for an AR series rifle and they tend to be more expensive.

Hope that helps
