I believe what you are thinking of is a Vietnamese weapon (actually a tool). I don't recall the actual name of it (I'll ask my Master next time I talk to him). They are actually tools used for harvesting rice (or so I was told). You hold the handle with the blade running along your forearm. The blade has piece that encircles your forearm (sort of like a horseshoe welded on to it) so it doesn't move around. The blade extends past your elbow about 3". The handle (sticking out by your thumb) could be used for striking and the front part (at the end of your fist) is flattened and could also be used for striking. You grab a handfull of stems and then sweep your arm in an elbow type strike cutting off the stems. Basically it is an Asian scythe. I guess their Grim Reaper uses smaller weapons than ours.
We used Tonfa for training purposes and I once cut up and rewelded an old WWII German bayonet into a rough facsimile. I've never seen one in person and I'm going by my Master's description and drawings.
